I suffered a heart attack in 6 th March and I am now on 6 tablets a day. I have now developed small round purple bruises on my right arm and leg. My 2 stents were inserted in in my right wrist, why am I bruising, should I worry ?

Hello & Welcome :-)

I am sorry to hear about you heart attack but glad they have put you some stents in and in time you will feel so much better :-)

I presume you are on medications now as well one usually is a blood thinner

Blood thinners do make us bruise so easily they can appear anywhere and we cannot even think if we have banged ourselves and most of the time we haven't but this is a side effect of the medication

I am not a Doctor but I do not personally think you have anything to worry about especially if you feel ok in every other way

Maybe just let your Doctor take a look or if you have a Rehab Nurse contact number mention it to them but I imagine they will no doubt say the same

I hope your recovery continues to go really well :-) x

A good example though of how we bruise easily and hopefully reassure others it is normal

Hope you are keeping well :-) x

Ticagrelor caused me a lot of bruising for no apparent reason.

Are you on clopidogrel? That makes you bruise pretty easily.

Dear Br1ghtons

Ticagrelor caused me odd bruising, but like BeKind28 has already said, tell your Dr/heart nurse, because it should be placed in your notes.

Take care

It will be the ticagrelor /aspirin combination that causes the bruising. I get big bruises but that's small beer compared to the job they are doing protecting my stents and heart. I'm now on a lower dose of ticagrelor (60mg twice daily) after one year and it seems to be a bit better than the original 90mg twice daily.

The ticagrelor is the likely culprit, as others have said. You need to mention it if you have injections, surgery or dental hygienist etc. I find they usually ask.

I spoke to my doctor, and she is going to do blood tests, to check everything, also, I have my first appointment at cardiology on Thursday, and re=hab exercise on Wednesday, so I am happy with that !

Check with GP, cardiologist or nurse. It's probably fine but check anyway. Have you read the side effects listed in the leaflets that come with your medication? They might provide some clarity.

I smiled when I read this because that's such a regular question. You will be on blood thinners, probably aspirin and ticagrelor or clopidogrel. The slightest touch will cause bruising even when you don't think you bumped anything. The blood thinners are usually prescribed for 12 months then stopped but aspirin is continued. HOwever it's odd that it's only in one arm so get it checked by your GP just to be sure.

Thank you for your helpful reply, the stent went into my right arm, I don't know if that is relevant !

Right arm seems to be the usual choice. My bruising was caused by eh nurse releasing the pressure bandage too soon. After a second angiogram I didn't even have a pin prick mark where the needle went in. YOu say these are regular shaped bruises which is also odd. my bruising can be all over my body and irregular shapes. Insist that your GP takes a look.

Hi Br1ghtons. Yes I am in similar meds and bruise unbelievably. I have green ones, blue ones, purple ones. They take ages to heal but don’t necessarily hurt. If the bruises are in a similar place and right side is it because of something you might do regularly (lean /sit) that causes the bruising you just aren’t aware of as it’s nothing unusual to you?

I never had any problems on Clopidogrel, I have been on those since 2017.

In October I was put on Ticagrelor and Aspirin for a year and I am having a new bruise every day.

A couple of days ago I found one on my wrist, earlier today I discovered a purple on on the inside of my upper arm!

I can't wait to go back to Clopidogrel.

Sorry I cannot give any advice. Just wanted to say I have bruising now and again but they dissappear. Meds are asperin 75mg bisoprolol 1.25 Atorvastatin 80mg lansoprazole 30mg. I had clopidogrel for 12months. They were stopped . I may have posted before about this . I apologise if I have. I go from day to day. I have stopped eating red meat and I am practical a vegetarian but it's fine. All the best to you all x

After a stroke (following an angiogram) I was put on Clopidogrel and never had any problems, later that year I had bypass surgery and remained on Clopidogrel until last year. In October 2021 I had to have 2 stents fitted and they put me on Ticagrelor plus daily Aspirin and bruised dreadfully, sometimes for no apparent reason. I had other side effects too so am now back on Clopidogrel which I am fine with.

I think a lot depends on your reaction of your blood thinners but bruising can be quite common.
