You really need to discuss this with your GP/cardiologist. By splitting it you are reducing the dosage, so they may need to adjust it.

I will be taking full dose, half in the morning and the other half in the evening

But you aren’t!If you should take 5mg once a day then you have 5mg going into your system, this will slowly diminish,, but if you take 2.5mg you have half the dose in your system, by the time you take your 2nd dose you may have 1.25 left from the 1st so you will have 3.75 in your system.

Your logic is not quite right. There is still medication in your system from the previous12 hrs and you are still inputting full dose over 24 hrs. It takes about 3 days or more to be completely out of your system.

I know how it works, but regardless you must discuss it with your medic.

I take 2.5mg am & pm on my cardiologist’s instructions, I wouldn’t make changes without them knowing.

I was enquiring whether people found side effects lessened. In actual it was my Cardiologist ( Very senior In top heart hospital) who suggested I try this method. Thank you anyway, did it improve side effects for you.

I didn't really have any 'unwanted' side effects, other than extreme tiredness mid afternoon which I could manage. My dose was split as my BP was dropping too low post exercise, it did seem to do the trick.

P.s. you could of saved most of this conversation by just saying 'it was suggested by my cardiologist'!

My doctor actually suggested this when they increased my dosage from 2.5mg to 5mg a day last year. I haven't had any problems with it.

Yes, my husband splits his dose. He finds it helps with the side effects. Both GP and cardiologist fine with it.

I had a similar problem with Bumetanide 1mg my gp said to split it half in morning half at lunch

I take a massive 10 mg a day. But mine is split 5 mg in the morning and 5 mg at night as per my GP's instructions. No side effects.

Please discuss with your Dr. Would be tragic if your body reacted negatively…..

I wasn't feeling well taking 2.5 once per day. Now take 1.25 morning and night and feel much better. It was my GP who suggested it.

Rehad suggested I divided my 7.5mg bisoprolol into 2 doses as my blood pressure was dropping too low when I took the full dose in the morning. I’ve taken one 3.75mg tablet twice a day for months now and it’s working well for me. So over a 24hr period I’m still getting 7.5mg and my pulse and BP stable. Problem with trying to split a very small tablet would be getting both parts even. I don’t know what dose your on but speaking with your GP might show if there’s doses manufactured that might fit twice a day whilst keeping the same dose in a 24hr period. Go totally happy with it divided into 2 doses.

I do believe that the patient information leaflet tells you how to split the tablet.

Dear Taichid

My dose is split to twice-a-day for exactly the same reasons that you are experiencing, this was after running it by my cardiologist.

Hope this helps

Hi,Yes, I'm on 10mg per day and my consultant has prescribed 5mg in the morning and 5 in the evening.

I used to take 10mg in one dose and I believe I feel better for splitting the dose (AM/PM).

As others have said, best to discuss this with your GP / Heart team.

I can see logic in splitting the dose as their would be lower peaks and troughs in levels.

I used to split 10mg with no issues and prior to that 5mg into two doses. Again no issues. Bisoprolol has a very long half life of 12 hours so splitting it can make sense as it would give you a constant dosing. Although it does stay active for 24 hours.

I have forgotten to take my single dose a couple of times and left over 24 hours since the last with no discernible change in BP or HR, it is a very long lasting drug. Hence splitting it to alleviate side effects is generally well tolerated and sometimes advised, my doctors have all said its fine.

Saying all of that trying to physically split a Bisoprolol pill is not for the less dextrous or those with sight issues, even with a pill splitter its a challenge!

However always check with your doctor or GP before any changes as we are all different.

All but the 1.25 tablet are scored and easily split. Of course if it makes you feel better it makes sense.

Is Metoprolol similar to Bisoprolol, I have 1 stent and take 25 mg a day seems to be suitable no side affects

I split 5mg morning and night and that way tolerate well. It helps having strong thumb nails and some brands seem much harder to split!

My GP is happy to prescribe 2.5 mg tablets so I can take a split dose of 2.5mg AM and 5 mg PM.

I was prescribed 5 mgs once daily but as I was more symptomatic upon waking my GP agreed that I could take 3.75 mgs in the morning (8.30 am) and 1.25 mgs at night (11pm).
