Just spoken to my stroke consultant and he’s looking at switching my clopidgrel for Apixiban (TIA last year).
Anyone had any experience of this drug? I’ve never heard of it.

Dear Curlyman83
Yes I was put onto Apixaban just after my bypass, mine was for blood thinning and to be honest other than the usual warnings that are always associated with this type of drug, I had no problem with it.
Mine was because I was in AF {very common after bypass} and helped the heart chamber empty better.
Hope the drug works for you in your diagnosis of a stroke
I am now off it as the AF has gone, there are plenty of members on here taking Apixaban maybe put that into the search bar here and it will bring up their past posts.
Good luck with it all.
I was put on Apixiban after I was diagnosed with AF a year ago, and I haven't had any ill effects. I'm also on Bisoprolol, and between the two I'm doing ok. I still get the odd occurrance, but not nearly as bad as it was. I hope it works for you.
Hello,
Apixiban it is a DOAC - Direct oral antocoagulant.
They are also prescribed for people with Atrial fibrillation to help prevent a stroke.
DOACs were developed to replace warfarin.
When my husband was diagnosed with Atrial fibrillation he was prescribed a different type of DOAC.
All the necessary testing that Warfarin requires would have made a greater negative impact on his life.
Although anticoagulants are commonly known as 'blood thinners', they do not thin the blood at all. What they do is stop it from congealing.
When our heart beats incorrectly and blood is not emptied completely from the heart chambers, there is a danger that this blood will congeal and form clots. Now we don't want those pumped out into our bodies, where they could cause a stroke, do we? That's what your anticoagulants try to prevent.
Apixaban is a very popular anticoagulant. I take Warfarin and have my own machine to check how my blood is and I'm happy with that.. My atrial fibrillation nurse was all for Warfarin, but when I last saw her she said she'd changed her mind and out of all the DOAC's was impressed with the reports on Apixaban.

Thanks for all the comments! They look really positive. I’m currently on clopidogrel so this looks like a like for like replacement!
Thanks all.
I was given Apixiban a couple of years ago but after 2 week I had the most awful reaction with large welts across my body (the paramedics diagnosed that It. Was the medication, quite common apparently). Cardiologist immediately switched me to Rivaroxiban and then no problems. Apparently RIvaroxiban is quite an expensive drug.
It wasn’t Apixiban - it’s edoxaban
Is there a reason for the change?
I had 2 stents fitted last year and my thinners have been changed for a year then I go back to Clopidogrel, I have been on these since 2017 when I had a stroke and have never had a problem.
I don't get on with my new thinners (not the same as you are on) but I had to change for medical reasons.
