Can I eat grapefruit while taking apixiban?

Hi all, I am prescribed apixiban, amlodipine and bisoprolol but I have noticed that about one hour after taking the amlodipine in the morning, i get a tightness in my chest, breathing is laboured, heavy legs and my general walking pace slows right down. These side effects last for several hours which really impacts on my daily routine and mental health. Consequently I want to stop taking the amlodipine and use a more natural alternative for hypertension that only occurs when I become more active.

I am contemplating eating grapefruit to help me regulate my BP which I will monitor. I am holding back on doing this because I am not sure if I can eat grapefruit while taking apixaban.

Hence my question is: Can I eat grapefruit while taking apixiban?

For over 6 weeks I have tried to get an appointment with my GP to discuss this matter but I cannot get one, hence I am trying to resolve this matter myself.

Really appreciate some feedback.

Thank you....Have a rewarding day

Dear DizzyD

If I have problems with medication I alway now contact my pharmacist, they have the up to date interaction that many Drs are behind with.

There is an interesting answer to your question on the AF Association part of this site.

Hope that helps you , good luck with it all

Grapefruit can interact with Apixaban. Try Googling Apixaban interactions. Not sure which you are “holding back” from. Grapefruit ‘yes’ but Apixaban ‘no’.

Holding back from Apixaban may solve the grapefruit question - a blood clot may ensue if you are deemed in need of an anticoagulant!

I set an alarm on my iPad for 9am and 9pm to remind me to take at the specified 12 hour interval.
