I have a blood Pressure reading in the morning at 9am of about 130/73 this is one hour after a breakfast of fresh grapefruit and porridge.

I take my blood pressure again in the evening at 9pm that's 3 hours after Dinner and I get high readings of about 179/96

I don't smoke or Drink ,I am not overweight (SLIM) do not eat any processed food, eat fresh veg and fruit organic when available,

had a ECG and its ok, had blood testes and every thing is normal,

not taking any type of medication,

So please has any one got a clue as to why I get this change in readings

130/73 morning to 179/96 evenings

Hello and welcome to the forum! Blood pressure tends to have a daily pattern being (usually) at its lowest while you are asleep and rising to a peak late afternoon/evening. Saying that your evening reading is unacceptably high. You need to see your GP to check for any underlying medical conditions. They may want to do a 24-hour monitor with their own equipment. It may be that you need to go on to BP medication. Just one thought - do you have an alcoholic drink(s) with your evening meal. This can affect BP more in some people than others.

thanks for your reply, but please read my posting again, I said no alcohol, since posting I have been taking bp several time in the day and it is always around the 130/73 until about 9 pm then It seems to shoot up

Sorry but your original post does not mention "no alcohol"! The evening readings are unhealthy and might suggest that medication might be appropriate for long term health. You need to discuss with your GP.

sorry but yes it does, it says don't smoke or drink, and it should be obvious that I have seen my doctor when I say I have had a ECG and bloods and they are all good, my doctor has not suggested meds because my morning readings are fine,

the reason of posting was to see if any one else had a similar problem and could enlighten me on subject

OK sorry! However, your evening readings are unacceptable so you need to speak to your GP again.

Hi landofhope.

What's your age?

Do you use salt and MSG in your cooking?

landofhope profile image

No salt no and what is msg

MSG is monosodium glutamate, a flavour enhancer and tenderiser. It is heavily used in Chinese cooking. I have an intolerance to it at the levels it is used at. They can cook without it but it means using higher quality ingredients. I haven't eaten Chinese in decades as some will happily tell you it is MSG free when it is not! :(

thanks for your reply ,but I get up at between 5am & 6am so it is at least 3 hours after getting up that I take a BP reading and as I said in my post I do not take any meds

thanks for your reply, I am not on a high carb diet I eat only home made organic stone ground wholemeal bread on occasion ,I do not eat white potato, rice, or pasta, I try to follow a Mediterranean type diet as much as possible ,

I don't know how many calories I have a day never counted, but as a example yesterday, breakfast, 30 grams porridge with skimmed milk left to soak over night, a half of a pink grapefruit and a black coffee, lunch a green salad with wild Atlantic salmon organic romaine lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, beetroot, and1 table spoon of extra virgin Greek olive oil, and 4 Kalamata olives. Main meal or Dinner ,local grown spring cabbage steamed carrots and parsnip 3 slices of British leg of pork ,no afters or supper or mid snacks, total of 3 cups of coffee on the day and approx. half a litre of highland spring water,

I am not over weight and have a cholesterol reading of 4.5 and blood glucose reading around 4.5 to 5

this is why i or my doctor cant understand the readings,

since my first posting I have taken my bp readings several times in the day and it is constant it just seems to rise latter in the evening,

the blood monitor is new

Just because a BP meter is new does not mean it cannot be faulty. Take it to your GP appointment for checking against theirs which are routinely calibrated.

thanks for your input , the reason I mentioned that the BP monitor was new, was because I changed it , because I thought the old one I had was faulty and was that giving me false readings

Olives could make your blood pressure rise they are very salty

Have you tried another machine ? You seem to be very resistant to any advice given. Appreciate it’s a worry but we are not doctors and people are offering their best advice and help, try and be a little nicer to people

Thank you MattUK for your input,

yes Matt I had a bp monitor and some of the readings I described in my opening post was from that bp monitor, that is why I went out and bought a new one because I thought the old one was faulty,

I entered the forum looking to see if any one else has experienced the problem I have and might have a solution for me, even the Doctor I have seen has not got a clue as to why this is occurring,

thanks again

thanks again for you input,

I am afraid I don't understand about glycaemic foods and calories, but I am shocked at what you say about the oatmeal and milk, I had no idea about that, I know sugar is in most things food naturally even a vegetable,

I an glad that I don't use sugar or any type of artificial sweetener but again thanks

Hello, sorry I'm late to the discussion.

My blood pressure has historically been low, so low that at night when sleeping it has caused panic stations in hospital 65/35 and less. I think I hibernate when deep sleeping. Now I can awake with 188, three hours later read 135 then later in the day 168. Consistently erratic with no pattern.

Last year was greatly family traumatic which I think caused the problem. I have an ectopic heart beat, tested, nothing to worry about so no treatments. That is becoming more obvious at times.

I am a great believer of mind over matter so bring very highs down with meditation but one cannot meditate 24/7 so have started researching natural ways. I have begun a course of Co Q10 and hibiscus tea this week.

I will return to the Doctor whose response was 'it's all over the place, isn't it. Have some blood tests.' These were ok so that was that except for the offer of statins. Refused.

Am I the only reply with these yoyo readings?

How are you now? I also get spikes in my BP. At odd times not relating to exercise or any other pattern I can detect . I get sudden highs to 180 and back to normal usually within an hour.

Do you take any exercise ? Is this pattern well established?
