Going cold turkey on Bisoprolol

Good morning,

I recently ended up in Resus due to having palpations and my heart rate was at 200bpm. Just before Christmas, I had to wear a heart monitor for 24 hours. I wasn't taking the Bisoprolol at this stage.

I thought from the start that the palpations were due to being dehydrated.

I finally had the monitoring results through and my heart ranged from 60-116 - apparently a 'very reassuring tape'.

However, since wearing the monitor, I started to take 2.5mg of Bisoprolol. My heart rate dropped to 48 and it scared me to death. My GP reduced the rate to 1.25mg. Bisoprolol doesn't agree with me at all. My anxiety has increased tenfold as I'm scared it will happen again, I feel head fuzzy and faint.

I spoke to a GP I've never seen before, yesterday, and she said to just stop taking it as I was on such a low dose. I've read on here the side effects of doing this.

I couldn't sleep last night as my anxiety is now through the roof at stopping this tiny tablet. My heart is okay though and I am so relieved but this now found anxiety is something else!

Shall I ask for anxiety medication instead? Oh, my blood pressure is in stage 1 hypertension too.

I feel lost. Can anyone offer any reassurance?

I was on Bisoprolol 7 years ago. Felt dizzy at times and couldn't exercise properly, it restricted me horribly. My normal resting heart rate was 55 before being on it. Came off it straight away with no problems at all and felt normal again.

Hello :-)

I am sorry to read you are feeling so anxious as someone that suffers with severe anxiety I do know how that feels and it takes you over

I also have a med fear tried to keep away from them but now I am on a cocktail of medications due to my heart and I know I have to take them and I feel they have messed with my system but there is such a thin line as anxiety also messes with your system to

It is good news the Doctor is happy enough for you to stop the med and if ever you do need to go on it again make sure you let them know it does not suit you as there are others you can try

Do you need anxiety meds you can always give them a go you have nothing to lose again if you felt they did not agree with you as an anxiety med you could always stop them

Know you are not alone and try and distract yourself from your thoughts , it is not easy but distraction is the best thing if we can manage it

The cocktail of meds I am on one is to thin the blood and you normally take it for a year

I was told I now can stop them and even though I still take other meds for my heart and wanted to come of as many as I could the thoughts that I am no longer taking this med has made my anxiety play up and I am not sleeping well yet I have to try and trust the professionals and tell myself there is no way they would take us of a med if they felt we needed it

Talk to your Doctor as well next time about some kind of talking therapy for anxiety they can refer you :-)

You are not alone in feeling the way you do and I hope it helps to know that :-) x

Dear MrsAnxious

Yes I can reassure you that you are doing everything that you can to pass this horrible moment in your life.

As it’s been said many times, most peoples worries come from lack of information that can leave them scared and worried.

You know your body and the reactions it has to treatments it receives.

Your reaction to the Bisoprolol is common as many on here will tell you.

That reaction/side effect with some goes off after a short period, with other, maybe yourself, it never does.

I am not medically trained so I cannot tell you to stop your medication, many on here do and if I was stuffing like yourself, so might I .

Why don’t you wait until you know/feel the results of stopping the Bisoprolol before you ask for anti anxiety medication, otherwise it will be difficult to tell which is beneficial to you.

Take care you are in my thoughts, and there is help for you and you will find it.

Thank you for your reply. I was thinking the same re the anxiety medication but it takes so long to get an appointment I thought - if I just had them . . .
