Does propranolol make acid reflux worse? As GP upped my dose for blood pressure and I seem to have worse acid reflux and cough. Happy new year to everyone hope someone can help as they keep changing my meds.

Dear Robann

What a sad way to start a new year and my heart goes out to you as acid reflux is a horrible thing.

I think that you need to contact your Dr again and express your fears, most medication can affect acid reflux { not saying Propranolol is one }

There are other ways to treat your acid reflux and many other drugs that do a similar job that Propranolol does

Once you have that balance restored hopefully you won’t be suffering so.

Take care

Hi,I've suffered from heartburn for many many years ,

Taken every product under the sun , and still suffer!

However someone recommended " apple cider vinegar ",

You wouldn't think something as acidic as vinegar , could help with heartburn ,

but it does, try it ,

I take a couple of teaspoonfuls, mixed with a lot of water!

Try it ,

(BTW, I'm 63 and have had AVR back in 2015 )

Cheers.

Hi thanks for reply I don't get heart burn but acid in throat snd awful cough, I managed to get rid of cough as had it since June and stopped November it was horrendous, now I cough as I eat, feel sick, and have lost weight, I think its heart meds, as been on irbesartan since end of November and propranolol raised I've told gp few times but said to stay with tablets, as I've changed a lot due to side effects which have been really bad, but this is worse really feel rough. Don't know what to do as need meds for blood pressure, but this really doesn't suit me at all.

Hi Robann, I had G.E.R.D. in 1999 and had a wrap (that's what I call it) to keep stomach acid from going up to my throat. I was informed if it kept doing that, it would cause throat cancer. My uncle got throat cancer. The only time that my G.E.R.D. gets really bad is with Nsaid and anything with any type of sulfur ingredient in it. I can't vomit but that stomach acid can still reach my throat. I stop any medication that causes that, immediately. It's put on my list of medications for doctor/pharmacist to not prescribe. Each medical/pharmacist is given this list. I never take med w/o food. Hope you find the right medication. GERD is no joke, I have to gargle with salt water to heal. I check ingredients in any pill I'm given when I do have a reflux episode. I am not a nice person when this happens. Have a Blessed Day!

Hi Robann

I know how terrible it is to wake in the night choking on stomach acid. I have been on omeprazole since my early twenties for reflux regularly sipping gaviscon, box of tums by the bed. had HA 7 weeks into lock down so never had rehab or still not seen my GP. when I was leaving hospital the doctor doubled my omeprazole. One year later when I stopped tecagrelor I cut back on omeprazole. It is now 19 months since HA. I have never had acid in my throat or indigestion since. I have even started eating spicy food again. I suffered from bad indigestion for 30 years. Now it has stopped. I am happy about that but I don’t understand why it just stopped. I was on propanol for a few years before HA my acid reflux did not get any worse.

Hi that's a long time to suffer! I don't get indigestion, but the reflux, is awful it eased for a while, but started again and cough worse but I just started a new blood pressure tablet Irbesartan so wondering if it's that, I'm still on propranolol and they upped it, so don't know, but it's exhausting.
