Diet advice please
Hi there. In the UK you should be able to get you cholesterol checked by contacting your GP directly. Your bloods will be taken and sent away to be tested then a few days later you’ll get the results. Don’t think you can check your own levels ? As for diet advice I’ve found there is none other than the usual don’t eat this or that and eat more veg and fruit. I’m struggling myself to find a good healthy heart diet
Thank you so much Cheekyweepuffin, I have printed off the Eat Better leaflet from the BHF. It provides some simple info, nothing we don’t already know but a useful reference point. Take care, Judi
Hi there.Look on the BHF website for a healthy eating plan. You can download everything you need.
If you have difficulty send me a message and I’ll give you the links.
I would do it now but I have to dash.
👍
Lots of us on the forum follow the Mediterranean diet recommended by BHF it’s not a diet as such just a healthy way of eating, as 007 said go to the BHF website and you will find lots of help including recipes. As for checking your cholesterol levels don’t know of any home test, mine are done yearly when my bloods are done. So try asking your GP for a test.
Best wishes Pauline
There is lots of useful info on the BHF website.I too suggest the Mediterranean diet, avoiding trans-fats and deep-fried Mars bars! Exercise is also important.
Ask your GP about cholesterol tests.
Hi There,Olive Oil, Rapeseed Oil and Sunflower Oils are ‘good’ fats. I substitute olive oil for butter or margarine when baking.
Also look up the DASH diet, it is aimed at reducing high blood pressure but is a healthy and simple to follow one. There is a good pyramid style guide to it.
Also take a look at Rice Bran Oil. It contains plant sterols, no cholesterol, light in flavour and natural vitamin E.
It has a high smoke point so it doesn’t burn when frying. Olive oil has a low smoke point so I normally use Olive oil on salads etc.
Also, I’m led to believe, that it’s better not to reheat oil as this changes something in it. So I always use fresh oil when cooking.
Oh never heard of Rice Bran Oil can I get it at a normal supermarket? or is it a specialist shop. Do tend to do quite a bit of stir frying would it be good for that? I use Rapeseed oil for cooking and olive oil for everything else. I started having Oat Bran porridge recommended by someone on the forum, it’s great.I wish you and your family a very happy New Year. With the hope the world becomes a more normal place in 2022, you never know you might get that trip up here to Bonny Scotland. The pandemic hasn’t changed our beautiful scenery 😂
Best wishes Pauline
Hi Pauline,
You can get it in most supermarkets.
Write ups say it’s good for you and lowers cholesterol but like everything you need to check it up for yourself.
Oat Bran porridge is on the shopping list 👍
Thank you and I hope that 2022 brings you peace and happiness in abundance.
Love to tour your neck of the woods in 2022. I’ll keep you informed.
Have a lovely time this evening and have a wee dram for me… but only one wee dram cos it goes straight to my head 😜
All the best to you and John.
A wee dram doesn’t go to my head it goes to my knees😩 always as done. When I first meet John he always said I was a cheap date, never drank spirits! My drink of choice is lime and lemonade! At our youngest sons wedding he told the caterers that they mustn’t run out of his mothers drink! If anybody didn’t know they would think I had a problem 😂
Pauline
Thanks JJ909 will check out the Dash diet. Judi
Trans fat is to be avoided at all costs.
Most trans fat is formed through an industrial process that adds hydrogen to vegetable oil, which causes the oil to become solid at room temperature.
This partially hydrogenated oil is less likely to spoil, so foods made with it have a longer shelf life. Some restaurants and takeaways also use partially hydrogenated vegetable oil in their deep fryers, because it doesn't have to be changed as often as other oils and it is cheaper.
These are not natural oils therefore the body has trouble processing them and they end up circulating in your bloodstream until they lodge somewhere, eventually causing a blockage when they build up or become dislodged.
Just check labels for foods which do not contain hydrogenated fats, most advertise this as it is a selling point.
Another concern is palm oil.
This oil has become ubiquitous in products from soaps, cosmetics to many foods, and has been attacked because it only grows in equatorial areas and lots of rainforest is being destroyed to make way for palm oil plantations.
This is bad enough, but another study by scientists in Spain has uncovered how a fat molecule found in palm oil, called palmitic acid, alters the cancer genome and increases the likelihood cancer will spread via metastasis, for these reasons I also avoid palm oil.
Stick to natural oils in moderation.
Good luck
Don’t think home tests are very reliable. Concerning diet, read the book, The China Study (on Amazon) and it links many diseases on animal fats. Plant based diet is the way to go. A good read.
Read Dr Furhmans the end of heart disease and he will teach you all about good and bad fats. Also Dr. Esselstyns prevent and reverse heart disease will do the same. By the way, both doctors say to avoid all oils, including olive oil, it is very bad for the lining of your arteries.
