I forgot to take my Bisoprolol for one day, do I need to worry?

Hi after heart attack a few years ago I have been on Bisoprolol and Ramipril I forgot to take one dose, I was unwell and slept for the entire day and when I woke up I realised it was probably too near to the next dose to take it, so I went on the nhs website and read the patient leaflet they both said if it was near time for next dose to skip and take the next dose as normal, but what I’m concerned about is when I started Bisoprolol the dose was increased gradually, so by taking the dose after skipping for one day will this not cause me problems, should it not have been done gradually again like when I started? I have called gp but can’t get an appointment today, I’m terrified I will have another H/A due to me missing this dose - anyone any experience? Thanks Dan

Hi Dan.

You should be just fine, do as the patient information advises and wait until the next dose is due.I take the same medication, Bisoprolol 7.5mgs and I have occasionally forgotten to take it, without any adverse reactions.

I don't know what dose you are taking but as you've only missed one dose, I dont imagine it would make any difference.

If of course you are feeling specifically unwell, and not from the anxiety it's causing you, call for medical assistance.

If you still feel you need assistance, call the BHF Nurse Helpline for further information.

Take care 🙏

Thank you for your helpful reply

Dear Dan7919

You will be fine missing just the one dose, please try not to worry {easy to say} as that worry will make you sicker than the missed dose.

If you have trouble getting a GPs appointment etc always remember in most cases triage can help {if your Drs has this service} your local hospital will also have a medication line, which they can tell you the interaction of your drugs as well as missed doses etc.

Stay safe

Many thanks for this helpful reply

I've been on Bisoprorol 5mg for 3 years, taking it morning and evening, and there have been times when I've forgotten to take the evening one. I just take the next dose as normal, and I've never had any ill effects. If you have any doubts, give your pharmacist a ring. It's easier than trying to speak to a doctor, and they will be able to reassure you.

Thanks so much that’s very reassuring, been terrified I may have a heart attack in my sleep, that’s my anxiety playing tricks, I suppose I would have noticed if there where adverse affects by now really, well that’s what I hope anyway! Thank you

Hello Dan, due to medications creating chronic nausea I had to stop them for a few days, to understand what was causing the problem. One of these was bisoprol. I was fine so it should be fine for you , I hope you are okay. Judi

Don’t worry Dan you’ll be fine. Missing one tablet won’t give you a H/A mate. Iv done the same thing many times over the years. Best wishes. Ron.👍

I wouldn’t worry. I forget for days sometimes when I take my meds: Bisoprolol, Ramipril, Atorvastatin, Levothyroxine, I went a week recently without them and didn’t feel any problems. Even my blood pressure was like 119/68 and within that ball-mark most of the time and I’m also a type 1 diabetic.

The mind has a very big part in how we feel and do things we have the power to change anything with our minds we know so little about ourselves but let others do the bidding for us. Time to take that back and be the destiny of our own decisions and outcomes.

Good luck and don’t worry.

Thank you! I really wish I could be more like you with that mindset, there where also other medications in my blister that I missed but I wasn’t worried about those but for some reason I’ve got it in my head that that little beta blocker is keeping me alive! You are right that the mind has a very big part in how we feel, thanks again

Myself I forgot to take Bisoprolol a few times without any reactions. I was not even afraid because I heard of some patients who take Bisoprolol only when having an unusual high pulse rate. They call it PIP (pill in pocket).

Unless you stop it completely, just one day does not make a problem.

Wow really I did not know people took this as a pip! You learn something new everyday! Thanks

Hi, Dan, I've been on Bisoprolol for three years, reducing down from 7.5mg to 1.25mg over time.

During those three years I have forgotten to take the medication (along with my daily doses of the other four that I take!) on a number of occasions and at first it filled me with dread. What I now do is to set an alarm on my mobile for 09:00 and 19:00 to remind me.

To come to the point, on no occasion did I have any noticeable adverse reaction....

If you can't get a call from your doctor, why not phone the dispensing pharmacy? Chemists know a lot more that ppl think....

Hope you get some reassurance.

I’ve halved my dosage and sometimes miss. Doesn’t make much difference. Perhaps my pacemaker is doing it’s job.

I hope all the support you have received will help put your mind at rest. I make up 2 weeks worth of tablets in divider box. I also have an alarm on my phone to remind me of my and my husband's tablets and it works well most of the time. Take care and have a good Christmas x

Dont panic! I went without my bisoprolol for 3 days back last year. It was intentional. I was asked to stop it to do a treadmill test. So I'd had no bisoprolol for 3 days then had to go and run my backside off on a treadmill surrounded by a nurse, cardiac physio and someone else. You'll be fine. Plus i had a sickness bug once and threw it back up within about half hour of taking it so couldn't take it again until the follwing day.

Thanks very much, I realise now I was being very dramatic 🤣, I obsessively Google and I was terrified when it said ‘ do not stop suddenly and cardiac arrest’ I need to step away from Google

Aww good ol' Dr Google. We've all been there with Google searching. Anxiety and stress levels were probably lower before search engines were around. If you had symptoms you went to a GP and that was that. You took their advice and got on with things. Nowadays we feel the need to self diagnose, google, search search and more searching until we're wound up with fear. Guess they'll be no use for GP's in the future if Google Health takes over 😆😆😆😆
