Practise standing up from and sitting down on your favourite chair without using your arms...and on/off the loo! To works on your core and will help after surgery when your chest will hurt if you push on your arms. Hope all goes well, best wishes to you and your loved ones.
Walking is generally considered to be a good all round exercise - distance, speed and timing to suit your ability of course. Twenty minutes is considered the minimum for having an effect on blood pressure. Walk for longer if possible, but if you are starting from having little or no exercise, then take it slow and build up.
As for losing weight, being careful of what you eat will help all round if you have a high BMI. A good diet is important - certainly avoid junk food and remember to keep hydrated.
Generally the fitter and healthier you are, the quicker the recovery from surgery.
Do you know where the op will be done? Fingers crossed they send you to Glenfield.
