You need to have your calcium level tested to see if you still need to take supplements. After thyroidectomy it's common for calcium levels to drop a little but the parathyroids which control calcium levels often recover very quickly so supplementing isn't necessarily a long term requirement.
If your surgeon accidentally removed all your parathyroids during the op then unfortunately you will need supplements for life.
Calcium can cause side effects and it also needs to be tested regularly because neither low or high levels are good.
Can you increase the calcium in your diet? Eat more cheese and yogurt, or add skimmed milk powder to foods. I don't know if this would help!
Hi, I am a 78 yr old female . I had total thyroidectomy in 2003 for cancer, the parathyroid were slightly damaged and as a result I have had to take calcium and calcitriol daily. A couple of times I have needed a bit of adjustment to the number of daily calcium tabs but no hassle really. I also have paroxysmal AF and take spironalactone, propranolol, ivabradine daily plus Lasix 4days per week. I also take blood thinner Xarelto because I have blood that clots (Activated Protein C and Leiden Factor 5)
Because for the last 3 years I have a problem with lack of strength I have been having (too damned slowly) investigations, I had an angiogram in Dec 2020 which the cardiologist said was a good result . In February I had a broncoscopy which showed nothing that we didn't know about (I have COPD and scarring to the lungs from viral pneumonia probably got some shrinkage on the left lung to because I had radiotherapy after breast cancer in 2009) but my blood oxygen levels are fine, usually between 90 and 96%.
Apart from the above I have fibromyalgia (diagnosed in 1996) which means I have to pace myself and my grandchildren call me bionic because I have 3 joint replacements (2 knees and R hip) also arthritis in both shoulders, spine etc .
As I say, I am fine from the neck up. Just want to be able to go kayaking again and work in my jungle of a garden.
Remember that you need to know what YOUR thyroxin levels should be, don't rely on the doctors totally, everyone is different and all doctors do not have the same opinions.
You also need to keep track of your calcium, I have never had a problem because of taking it, just sometimes my levels are too low because my body doesn't absorb it enough. I do not have a kidney problem and never have had although that are getting a bit old now
😆
Take an interest in your body, perhaps keep notes because the brain becomes overloaded with info the older we get and be happy.
cheers Carole
