I have read varying reports regarding Folic Acid tablets and cardio stents. I gather that recent studies show that folic acid tabs can have a diverse effect on the stents and can cause restenosis. Is this correct, as I have just been given 84 days of these tablets and recently had 3 cardio stents. This has made me very wary. My pharmacists wasn't too happy about me being put on these, but my GP says he hs heard nothing regarding a problem. What is correct?

I suggest you highlight - 3. Who can and can't take folic acid. to your GP.
I have a stent but I also take methotrexate for psoriatic arthritis which means I have to take folic acid. As far as I can see the research is a bit ambivalent so the precautionary principle says don’t take folic acid after a stent unless, like me, you really need to.
Hi ya,
I was in exactly the same situation as you. Major HA March 7th, 2 stents fitted and 3 weeks later I was given 3 months supply of Folic acid without any explanation! I had also heard the varying opinions like yourself.
I asked my GP and he said he didn’t know but would try and find out!! I asked my cardiac rehab team nurse and she run it by the cardiologist. Both GP and Cardiologist came back with the same reply. Do not take them for at least another 3 months.
I may not even bother with them, they are almost like vitamins and you can replace low folate within your diet. Hope that helps
Take care
Ian
Just be aware that some meds can cause malabsorption of B9, so no amount of food will help! Of course, if your deficiency is due to poor diet then you should be fine.
Thank you everyone for your replies. They confirm what I was thinking. I await to see what my GP and the Cardiologist says.
Definitely 👍
In the same situation GP states he knows nothing about this so will no be taking. Going to speak with cardiac nurse see what she knows.
