My partner had a quadruple bypass on the 12th March. He was home a week later, but since then he’s been having awful pain in his left shoulder and can’t sleep properly for it. Any suggestions?

It’s a very tough time and it feels like you’ll never get through it, it may be worth ringing the cardio team that you would have been given the number for. They were very helpful to me. A general suggestion is to take the full doses of pain meds that you were given if if you don’t like them. I found a cool gel pack helped me loads (Amazon) you don’t need to freeze them and they are resuusable and cheap. Bless you guys, hope you find the support you need.
Morning Brief,
Sorry your husband is suffering, when we have open heart surgery, we are put in some very strange positions on the table so the surgeon can do his work! So having pains in some odd places places we don’t think we should have sometimes comes from that. Taking our pain medication on time regularly helps having a V shaped pillow so we are propped up in bed also helps. It’s early days taking it slowly but knowing you will get there.
Life does get better, I am 4 years on and grateful every day to the medical team that gave me my life back.
As Corn24 said give his team a ring see if they can help.
Best wishes Pauline
I also had a quad CABG in January. I had a lot of discomfort in my left shoulder too. Massage, heat patch and paracetamol worked for me. I am 12 weeks after the surgery and have no shoulder pain now. It will pass !

It’s very early days for your partner yet.
I had a quintuple bypass March 2019 and I was back home in five days.
I had to sleep sitting up for a week or two due to pain on chest, inside chest and in arms.
It’s a very big operation and it takes time to recover.
I could not raise my left arm up my back much higher than my waist for months and took over a year for me to get it back to raising it up my back with some normality.
You’ve got an uphill struggle over the next few months but it will get better.
Four weeks after the bypass I was driving the car but it took me twelve weeks before I was allowed to ride my motorcycle because I had to heal enough and make it legal for insurance.
We can only give you our own experience and everyone is different. If you have any concerns whatsoever it’s always best to check with your GP or Cardiologist.
When it’s time for you to do the cardio rehab, live with a cardio team or online I would do so. I can’t recommend it enough.
I did it twice because I also had five stents two years before the quintuple bypass.
I used to tell myself “every day in every way I’m getting better and better”.
Best of luck and a speedy recovery.

Hi Brief. After my CABG I had awful pain in my right shoulder which was worse at night and really effected my sleep. Was so painful that even the pain killers didn't really help other than codine, however, a hot water bottle was good for soothing the pain.
I got referred to a specialist by my GP and was diagnosed with scapula dyskinesis. Fortunately, some specialised physio and exercises really helped and cleared it up.
Yea, Converse with your doctor I don't seriously believe we can respond with a medical solution. Good Luck.
Thanks so much everyone for your comments.
