Oh, poor you, that can be so painful. Vaseline should do the trick quite quickly especially used overnight - at least it does for me.

I can’t use that with oxygen

Oh dear, sorry I didn’t realise that. The yoghurt sounds a good suggestion though,

Vaseline must not be used when on oxygen therapy.

I know that don’t worry

I know you know, I just wanted to let Celtic know for future reference x

Thank you. I misread that thinking that it was caused by having been on oxygen!

I didn't know that either, why is this? Char

Because petrolium products are highly flammable and burn readily in an oxygen rich environment.

While in hospital last year my lips were very sore and cracked after a week on oxygen therapy without using my lip balm. One of the nurses told me to apply yoghurt and it was very effective. It was just hard to resist licking it off!I know there are certain lip balms that are ok and someone may come along to specify them but I thought that this might help in the meantime.

You need a balm that does not contain petroleum in base , preferably NO chemicals. I can recommend Neal’s Yard Remedies Bee lovely lip balm . A little goes a long way, it’s very soothing

Thanks but it isn't me asking.

Hi B2B

You can only use water based creams nothing with petroleum based products such as vaseline.

KY jelly is what the Respiratory nurses told me to use.

The inside of my nose gets really sore from the oxygen cannulas too.

When I was in hospital my nose was the worst when I was on oxygen, no one mentioned not using vaseline, is it different when in hospital char

No oxygen and vaseline don't safely mix.

I had no idea, I remember moaning about my nose being so sore, but can't remember what my nurse said, probs the meds! I always had vaseline on my lips char

I didn't know either until I was given my oxygen at home😳The Respiratory Nurses go through a long list of the do's and don'ts of using oxygen when they visit you.

It's funny how you don't think about things until someone mentions it, that's what's good about this forum char

I doubt wax would be allowed either - it is similar type of chemical to vaseline. Same for olive oil. Water based solutions are quite different chemicals, so it sounds like it is best to go for one of them.

I’m not sure if it interacts with oxygen buddy2blue but I use coconut oil or simple olive oil which works very well for dry lips but check out if suitable first as I don’t know.... good luck x

buddy2blue profile image
buddy2blue in reply to Meatless

I was thinking of coconut oil. I will speak with my respiratory nurse xx

Milkfairy profile image
MilkfairyHeart Star in reply to buddy2blue

Please speak to your Respiratory nurse first.

The reason is that you cannot use anything that is flammable which will include beeswax and coconut oil or other oils.

I am told each check up visit from the Respiratory nurse only to use water based products near oxygen.

No grease or oils 😊

Hi there buddy2blue You can use any lubricant that is water based like Aquagel or Optilube. As you know oil based lubricants are flammable. Both can be bought in tubes or sachets from the pharmacy. Good luck and hope it solves your problem.

I have a jar of Vaseline by my side all the time, marvellous for dry hands too

Lip salve is good. I cannot use Vaseline on my lips as it gets everywhere. I use it a lot each day otherwise my lips get very sore and cracked. I have to shut my mouth - don't laugh! - at night using a paper plaster because I sleep with my mouth open otherwise and my mouth get so dry and I end up with ulcers. Using the paper plaster has done the trick but if I do not use lip salve and get cracked lips and cold sores. Hope you find a solution

What an interesting thread you developed B2B. I was fascinated by all the replies and learnt a lot. I hope you find the most appropriate relief. Even a kiss might do 😘

lip dryness etc main cause is dehydration need to drink lots of water 2 or 3 ltrs per day atleast.

buddy2blue profile image
buddy2blue in reply to Dickydon

I’m on fluid restrictions so that’s not always easy

Dickydon profile image
Dickydon in reply to buddy2blue

okay, that must be a pain. I suppose, there are tablet forms that deal with hydrating the body rather than having to drink lots of water.

Compressed gas is very dry and oxygen literally burns any tissue that’s exposed to it. There are lip balms and creams specifically for use with oxygen. They’re often based on beeswax and are easily available on the internet.

Milkfairy profile image
MilkfairyHeart Star in reply to Mentdent

You cannot use any substance that is flammable with oxygen including beeswax.

Good point about the inflammable thing. Beeswax definitely burns. I don’t think the ones advertised actually use beeswax itself. At least one would hope not.

The Respiratory Nurses who monitor those of us using oxygen at home recommend water based products only.

I was asked to sign a form to say I that I had read and agreed to follow the safety instructions when using oxygen at home.

Can’t be too careful.

After my AVR I had awful cracked lips that just wouldn’t go away , tried everything but there’s only one product for you. Don’t laugh but it’s called Nipple Balm. I got it from SpaceNK and it lasts for ages. It’s used for lots of things not just as the title suggests 😄. I’m sure it will work for you - it’s like magic, give it a go and good luck, there’s nothing more annoying than cracked lips - well almost nothing 😄. Good luck and best wishes, Sue X 🙏
