Compression stockings

Hi all, I wondered if anyone could give me any advice. 11 days after AVR OHS and the compression stockings are driving me nuts. All they seem to do is make my ankles below and knees above full of fluid. Is this right? I have them on 24 x 7 as advised. Walking around and starting to get some short distance walks in but no change to legs. Any thoughts?

Thanks

Sam

I developed an electrolyte imbalance and drained 9kg purely as fluid. The cause of the imbalance had to be addressed but in addition I was put on Furosemide for over a month to clear the fluid. You need to contact your GP today!

Thanks Michael. I was on Furosemide for 5 days but made no difference and course now finished. I will do as you suggest. 👍

Hi,Don’t think any of us who have had to wear them think there ok😩 it was a relief to go to 12 hours a day and then when I didn’t have to wear them at all bliss! Fluid retention are you on a water tablet maybe furosemide?Think a call to your cardiologist or GP. You shouldn’t be holding water.

Great your starting to get some walking in it all helps.

Thanks Pauline. I was on Furosemide for 5 days but still have the water retention after finishing the course. Think it’s a call to GP. 👍

This may help. But as always consult with your gp.

No matter what 'they' may have told you, compression stockings are not 'one size fits all' - sizes vary from maker to maker and also depend on which compression pressure level your medic wants you in (compression pressure level is written as the pressure level plus the letters mmHg).

For example, I have at times required a size large at 15-18mmHg (light pressure, usually suitable for wearing during a long-haul flight or car/coach/train journey). I once had to have a flight attendant help cut off my stockings - got them off and realised I'd bought size small...so so so uncomfortable!

I'm still a 'big lass' but have lost weight and diminished oedema to the point I can comfortably and successfully wear a size medium in all the compression pressure levels. Lol, I'll never wear a small, I wouldn't have been able to wear a small since aged around ten years. You may be the same - body weight, amount of oedema, and pressure level required are all factors to consider with a compression stocking.
