Chest pain on exertion

I’m not the fittest person in the world, far from it...

Twice now I have noticed chest pain on exertion...by exertion I mean

Walking at pace where you are having to really work your breath and talking you know the times where you are forcing your words out and trying to catch a breath in between I’m small and practically have to jog to keep up with whoever I am walking with.

Twice now when I’ve been doing this I’ve noticed chest pain, it’s frightened me both times but walking slower or stopping seems to help.

Tonight was on my right side of the breast bone and felt like it went into my lower ribs once that passed it’s left my upper back so sore!

I’m waiting on a 24hour monitor (for another reason) and once I’m back at cardiology I’m going to mention the pains

I’ve had on/off chest pain in the left side since last year, echo was fine, ecg was fine and bloods were fine (I later developed ectopics due to anxiety thinking the pain was my heart and now I need the monitor for the ectopics)

This pain in my right side in a sense felt similar to the left but came on suddenly when walking and faded out over 10-20 minutes then I had a quick squeezing pain lasting seconds but down in my lower right ribs (under my boob)

When my left side first started getting painful and I was told it wasn’t my heart I visited a chiropractor who mentioned costochondritis.

If this pain I experienced on exertion was my heart would it be right sided ?

Anyone a costo sufferer and had similar pain on exertion/exercise ?

Hi,

It sounds as if you need to get checked out. Pain in the chest and feeling unwell due to exertion is a serious symptom. I had something similar before my heart attack. My advice would be to stop looking for answers and go to A & E. Best wishes

Try not to worry you are being investigated properly.Mention the pains you've had to the doctors and, in the meantime, ask those who walk with you to slow down a bit.🙂

Thank you, I’m only 28 with severe heart anxiety the thought of a heart attack freaks me out majorly! I’m writing everything down so hopefully can remember to tell the cardiologist everything I’m experiencing, this time last year I had no reason to believe anything was wrong with my heart now it seems everything about it freaks me out causing panic and fear.

Costochondritis affects the ligaments that fasten your beast bone to your ribs. It is inflammation. I was told if you press on your breastbone and it physically hurts then it's most likely costo rather than heart

I had aches all over my chest last night some areas hurt to touch others didn’t or areas that were sore to touch quickly felt better but I’ve had off/on pain (little stabs and aches) since last night my left side started to get sore to I’m the places I’ve had pain before but was told it wasn’t my heart.

Hi Jrit, I too had exertion chest pains a year last August, I knew something was wrong but not sure what at the time.I had always kept. Myself physically fit so knew it wasn’t natural what I was experiencing. I foolishly assumed it was indigestion as a good belch seemed to clear it. It wasn’t until I had a very bad experience whilst rushing to catch a bus, that when I said I said enough is enough and saw the doctor on the Monday morning, I spent all day Monday in the heart ward undergoing a series of tests whilst attached to an ECG machine. The outcome was that at some point( Iguess the Friday before when I had the bad pain) that I had done some damage to my heart. They said I had had a HA. But I dismissed this as didn’t experience any of the symptons thet we In general associate with a HA. ie the crushing chest pain, pain in the left arm etc. Get yourself to the Dr and get checked out, if you are having chest pains you should aoutomatically be referred toHospital like I was, I live in Scotland, should be the same policy in England, Wales or any NHS REGION. Beter safe than sorry, mate. I was lucky, ended up having 2 stents fitted, almost back to the fitness I was before, if I had left it I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t be writing this for you or anybody else who might be experiencing the same as you. You have nothing to loose but everything to gain, just don’t ignore it, it won’t magically disappear overnight. Your doctor is the best person to get the ball rolling. If you don’t you will wished you had. But if you don’t you may never be around to wish you had, god luck don’t take no for an answer an don’t stress over it. To put it in better context one of my arteries was 75% blocked, I was already on borrowed time I’m sure. But one year later I am almost as good as new, yes I’m on a load of meds, but better that than on a slab. Take care, let me know how you get on, but get on you must. I used to smoke, but had stopped over 30 years ago. My diet was normally healthy over the years, but a multitude of circumstances could have accumulated to cause it, one of the things I thought might be responsible is I used to use a lot of coconut oil as it was reportedly healthy form of fat for you!

Thanks for your reply, I’ve been had of issues with palpitations, and was in a&e on Friday ecg didn’t pick up anything other than the ectopic beats, I had an echo 2 months ago that also didn’t pick up anything I think I’ve had this pain 3 times now whilst doing the same thing, I mentioned it to the ambulance crew and was told the right side typically isnt usually associated with the heart and that the way you breathe can bring on chest pain to it kind of eased my anxiety about it all, I’m only 28 so was terrified at the idea of a heart attack! I’m waiting on a 24hour monitor so will be seeing the cardiologist at some point who I will be asking about the pain and seeing if there are more tests that can be done just to rule everything out.

I’m glad your doing better now and they got you sorted quickly.
