What causes body to jerk?

This is something new to me so don't know where its coming from. It was just a sudden spasm that made a leg or arm move without any request from my brain. Now it can be my whole body usually at night. No discomfort or ill effects and last a fraction of a second. Any ideas?

Hopefully we will get someone else with the same problem who knows what it is. I have mentioned it to h.f. nurse but acknowledged and not commented on.

They are called a Hypnic Jerk and are quite common.

I get them now and again. The full body ones normally as I am dropping off to sleep, the involuntary leg or arm movements can happen at any time. I have had them for years and they have never really bothered me. They get worse with lack of sleep and I think some medications may cause them also. Alcohol and caffeine and other stimulants may also cause them to be more common.

Hope that helps!

Thanks so much. Yes that helps a lot and as I went through a disrupted sleep period and poor appetite it makes sense.

Me too, I didn't even mention it to the consultant in case she thought I was dreaming or worse 🤣and when she said about the magnesium I looked it up and low and behold spasms is a symptom! I hope you get to the bottom of what is causing them char
