Are heart arrythmia’s always dangerous?

Sometimes I’m too scared to go to sleep! I’m not sure if I’ve now started imagining chest discomfort but I’ve got it in my head that at age 56 my heart problems are not fixable and they will ultimately kill me and I’ve become obsessed with my cardiac arrhythmia (the app on my phone doesn’t help as it sometimes flags up a problem). I’m sure the stress makes it worse! Any advice? Thank you. J

Hi Ninjacat,

No, arrhythmias are not 'always' dangerous. In my own case, both my GP and my cardiologist said that the risk of my atrial flutter (now 'fixed' with a cardioversion, but that might not be permanent), was mainly the stroke risk which is managed with Apixaban (anticoagulant) but not the flutter itself.

But there are several different arrhythmias with different degrees of severity, so no-one except for your cardiologist can pronounce on the risk of your particular problem. At 69 years old, I sleep well at night and don't allow the possibility of falling back into flutter to keep me awake.

Hi Ninjacat,

I know exactly how you feel. I have AF and a pacemaker. I can’t stop thinking

about my heart and it seriously effects my day to day living. Yes,we will

always have our heart problems, but your heart is far stronger than you think. I think people like you and me need help to come to terms with our

problems. I have started doing mindfulness and would recommend it to

anyone suffering with anxiety. Please consider this book,

“Mindfulness a practical guide to finding peace in a frantic world”

This is a fantastic site that you have joined and there are lots of people like us out there with all sorts of problems and they are always here for you.

Anytime you feel anxious, someone will chat and help you. But also you

could get some help. A psychotherapist Would certainly help.I am seeing one for severe anxiety. Hope all this is of some help.

severe anxiety all caused because of heart problems
