Not to get too political but...I was actually thinking perhaps he simply panicked when he and his wife started becoming unwell and needed to be sure someone who understood their wee man was on the spot to care for him (but I did wonder why the older niece couldn't have come to London rather than him driving north).

Then he straps his son into the car and he and his wife do a 'vision test drive'?!

He lost me at that point - what if his heart had been compromised and he had a heart attack behind the wheel with his wife and son in the car?!

Watched last night, unbelievable. No apologies just his reading of the lockdown rules different to everyone else’s. Those Grandparents who have not been able to help their families who have had Covid and they have young children 16 months and 9 months and only live 5 miles away. Seems to be 2 sets of rules!!

I think you should watch it!

He said that he felt ok to drive back to London, his wife wasn't convinced, so to satisfy her concerns they went for a drive. Are you saying they should have left a 4 yo home alone!

I think he did exactly the right thing, given the abuse & death threats etc. most of which was incited by the media, who if you watch some clips back, did not respect the social distancing rules while harassing him about the rules.

We'll have to agree to disagree, Gaz. If he wasn't sure of his vision he should have consulted with a GP, and he should have left his wife and child at the lockdown refuge, end of.

Think about it - would you, unsure of your eyesight and stamina for a long drive, load your partner and young disabled child (his four year old is autistic) into the car for a 'test drive'? I wouldn't - and if I did do it, someone would have 'the social' on me in a half-heartbeat - rightly so. Responsible parents with good judgement, particularly when unwell, do not put their child into danger, full stop.

He was sure of his vision, he felt well enough for the long drive, his wife wanted reassurance. Not really difficult to understand, unless you choose not to.

I totally agree with his actions, as do the majority of people who aren't media.

:) I'm not msm. And I was willing to wait to hear 'his side' - unfortunately he DID say he was unsure of his vision and stamina and that is why he did the test drive - to see if he could keep it together for a long drive back south.

Please - go back and watch the video, don't take my word for it.

And, I think we're done here on this. I don't want to row with you and I certainly don't want to be the cause of yet another discussion being shut down to replies. My personal belief is he made a serious error of judgement taking the test drive, your opinion differs. Let's let it drop now.

From the transcript:

“On Sunday 12 April, 15 days after I had first displayed symptoms, I decided to return to work. My wife was very worried, particularly given my eyesight seemed to have been affected by the disease. She didn't want to risk a nearly 300-mile drive with our child, given how ill I had been. We agreed that we should go for a short drive to see if I could drive safely.”

As they frequently say "Other monuments are available"!

I felt for him when I heard his holiday cottage did not meet the latest designer standards! 😢

Can we get back to being supportive like at the beginning of the pandemic please. I’m sick of hearing people bitching about Dominic Cummings. If my husband and I were ill and our 4 year old needed care we would have driven as far as we needed to get help. Give him a break. We’re the only ones self isolating in this area. Everyone is out and about, having barbecues with their mates, going out partying and some old people going out on day excursions every day.

Totally agree Maisie.

100% agree, imagine also dealing with the abuse, death threats etc.

The media have a lot to answer for, this is a witch hunt because he doesn’t allow certain media access to the PM.

Well for me before these posts get removed. Does his wife not drive? Could his parents or another family member not come and babysit, after all DC was a key worker and why on earth would anyone drive if they suspected their eyesight was suffering. Put people at risk again. But then again our roads are superb, we have rumble strips at the side so we know if we ever veer offk😂
