Propranolol use in pregnancy

Hi.... New here. Got searching on propranolol as I was put on it a couple of weeks ago. I had gone to the Dr. With tachycardia and was 9 weeks pregers. I hoped him recommending this drug was based on risk benefits as I read it could have effects on my baby. Initially put on 40mg daily at night... It seemed to have helped but just couldn't stop worrying about its possible effects on my baby. Later changed doctors and spoke to the new obs/gyna who advised I gradually reduce dose to 20 mg a day... Took that a week and now on 10mg a day on the 5th day... So today I decided not to take it... I have been having racing heart... Beats are so magnified I could actually feel my glasses shake even when I am lying still.... I really hope to get it out my system as I am now in my 2nd trimester and I get worried about my baby... Anyone with such experience? Could really use some encouraging outcomes. How long before I stop feeling this way?

Hello Erastis 2310

Welcome to the forum.

Beta blockers such as propranolol are more commonly used in pregnancy to treat high blood pressure.

Are you based in the UK?

If so I suggest you contact the team responsible for your care, either your midwife or obstetrician. When you first saw the midwife they should have given you a contact number available 24 hours a day to ring.

Alternatively ring 111 and ask for their advice if you feel unwell

The BHF Helpline is another useful source of help where you can speak to one of the cardiac nurses for advice

I hope you feel more at ease soon.

Thanks Milk fairy... Unfortunately, I am not in the UK

I can now appreciate why the doctor prescribed the drug cos my bp was elevated a few days before... But I was also made to understand he was treating a possible anxiety....

Thanks so much for your response... At least I am a bit at ease...
