Withdrawing from propranolol is a nightmare

sparkling_bohemian profile image

Hello everyone,

I was given Propranolol for my migraines over a year ago and to be honest they never did anything. I still got my one migraine a month and it was still the same level of pain. So I decided to come off them when I experienced a side effect all of a sudden: red, tingly fingers. I was on 80mg a day (40mg twice a day) and the GP just told me to cut down to 40mg. The withdrawal was immense! Full anxiety, heart palpitations, elevated blood pressure and tension headaches. After consulting with the GP again they decided I cut down by 10mg 1-2 weeks. I then did 5mg and then 5mg every other day. Now I am completely off them and have periodic heart palpitations which consist of feeling every beat of my heart in my chest and head, anxiety, sweaty palms and shivery and shakiness. Has anyone else experienced this? It’s absolutely awful and I am so fed up with all these withdrawal symptoms. I have an appointment next week with the GP but I hope it does get better as I’m this close to taking myself to A&E.

Hi, yes. The withdrawal is awful. See my post on barbiturates... healthunlocked.com/anxiety-...

The terrible thing is if you go back on them, you will feel so much better in less than 12 hours. Do not do this!

I'm sorry, but this is one of those things you need to let time sort it out. I dont think drs realise the effects some of these drugs have.

Honestly after a couple of weeks you will feel better, you are just going to have to tough it out, I developed a weird addiction to lemon sherbets to stop it. HTH

I threw them out as I didn’t want that temptation! I’m glad I’m not the only one. That does give me some comfort. I will read your post too!

Thanks for your reply. I’m going to keep trucking on and try not to let it affect me!

During withdrawal certain foods will help tremendously in your recovery. Make sure you are on a heart healthy diet salmon avocado green leaves I’m taking coenzyme q10 almonds red meat dairy stay away from caffeine sugar and processed foods also eat lots of berries. I made a smoothie for dinner w mixed greens orange juice and berries. Your diet will help tremendously. These foods have vitamins for your heart to be healthy 💕🌸

I am in my third week of withdrawing from propanolol. I felt exactly the same way you did the symptoms have lessened but have not all gone away. My pharmacist says the regular don’t technically go away until after 3 months. This site has helped me to know I’m not the only one. I was otherwise perfectly healthy before this drug. I’m assuming others it works for but the drs don’t mention the side effects. First 2 weeks withdrawing for me were awful. One day at a time you will get better.

Thank you so much MisLissa! I also joined when I saw others were having either side effects while on them or coming off them. It’s such a relief to know that you’ve gone through similar withdrawal and you are doing better now. We just keep being strong! X

I was not aware that propranolol was addictive.

My heart rate dropped below 50 and after 5 years of taking Inderal I had to stop suddenly. I had no withdrawal symptoms at all.

That’s great I haven’t heard that before.

Dr Google tells me propranolol is not addictive but sudden cessation can precipitate heart attacks with those predisposed to them and can increase angina pain.

How are you doing so far off the propanolol?

I’m doing a bit better this week! Perhaps I’ve been busy (painting the house, ikea DIY) and I’m either not noticing the withdrawal or I’m improving. I’ve got an appointment with my GP on Thursday, just to check everything over.

How about you?

That’s great news! I’m still recovering, I have some more healing to do. I was so happy all my results came back normal so I cleaned and cooked then then I ended up in bed the rest of the day I did too much. I think my body still needs time to heal, one day at a time for me. It’s hard because I want to run all day long. I was just thinking of you hoping that you were ok because for some it a rough road and I didn’t want you to think you were the only one. I’m so glad you are feeling better. Take care and God bless you. 💕🌸💕🌸💕🌸💕🌸💕🌸💕🌸💕🌸

Thank you so much, MisLissa! I’m hoping you will get fully recovered and happy your results were clear too!

It has really helped having someone in the same boat as me (misery loves company?! 😂). It’s really anchored me and not let the anxiety get the upper hand. I hope you have a speedy recovery and you will get to run soon! Just need patience!

Yes and I was only on 10mg when GP did a two week withdrawal and I still got the palpitations, high heart rate , impending death/doom feeling. It was absolutely HELL. I saw a cardiologist privately in the end and he switched me to a different beta blocker which I am still on as I am too scared to go through withdrawal again and cardiologist said it’s such a small dose . Il probably try again further down the line. I also went to A and E- they don’t have the specialism to help u.

I’m so sorry to hear what a rubbish time you’ve been having. Also stinks that A&E couldn’t help. I also contemplated seeing or phoning a cardiologist to find out what was going on. But after reading other people’s experience’s I decided to tough it out and see (and hope) it passes.

I hope things will get better for you. X
