Heart rate after exercise.

Hi Guys,

Had HA in January and 2 stents fitted. After initial Rest period I have attended hospital cardio gym for 4 sessions before it stopped due to the covid19 issue. I've carried on light exercise at home Inc walk on treadmill, light weights, static bike in last week I have been getting sharp pain in centre of shoulders when walking on treadmill which passes when exercise stops but leaves chest feeling slightly tight (resting hr 65 - 75) Heart rate also goes up to 110 - 130 on any light exertion - walking the dog, climbing the stairs with slight short of breath. Is this normal part of recovery/increased activity. Have questioned if its fluid, over doing exercise, muscle ache, bruised heart again through exercise. Any help appreciated thankyiuy

Hi Lew15

I started doing Stage 4 rehab in the local leisure centre being supervised by the cardio rehab people, but had to stop after the first 2 sessions due to covid19. Since then rehab have been mailing details of exercises out, and I've had a phone call to check how I am (told they'll be ringing up every few weeks for check all OK) - so they're clearly keeping in touch with patients, so I'd give them a ring to get their advice.

The advice I've been given is that should keep heart rate to 220 less age and keep within 70% of that, so for you that would be 220-49 = 171 * 70% =120

Hi Lew15. I think this is one of those cases where I’d try and get in touch with the cardio nurses or call the BHF nurses. I don’t think there’s anything to worry about re your resting heart rate and heart rate on exertion and the feeling of tightness could be because your heart hasn’t fully recovered from the bruising caused by the stents (I had the odd twinge for some months after) especially when i over did exercise. But if it happens consistently I’d ask an expert to give a view.
