Situation Normal??

So here we all are quite rightly making huge changes, sacrifices, to our lifestyle, many people laid off and lost jobs and so on. Can somebody tell me why we are still allowing dozens of flights to land here?? Already this morning 4 jumbo's full have touched down at Heathrow from NEW YORK of all places! The city is probably riven with it. What is happening to all the people who disembark, are they going straight into quarantine? Or more likely being told to self isolate if they feel any symptoms. It's a joke! Some countries such as Australia and Canada have put complete bans in place, I find it infuriating that we have not done so. Two of these flights were BA, why has the government not ordered them grounded?

Rant over.

Couldn’t agree more. Arrivals from high risk regions (of which the US is clearly one) should at least be in quarantine for 14 days - assuming they can’t be tested on arrival.

Any system is only as good as its weakest link (supermarkets being another obvious risk - but probably impossible to make risk- free).

Yes I can’t understand it either. I remember when Italy was first put on lockdown and Tom Cruise just got into his private jet and flew to London. Why didn’t anyone have anything to say about that? Canada were on lockdown but Harry and Meghan just hopped to a private jet and flew to California. Different rules for money. The virus doesn’t distinguish between money and no money.

Harry and who??

I see, but infrequently, planes en route to/from Luton Airport. Looking at the online arrivals/departures one asks why?

I think any repatriation should be done by the military using RAF bases straight to secure lockdown!

in reply to MichaelJH

Can you give Boris a shout he has obviously not thought of your common sense approach. I am blinking sure all these flights are not repatriations! They should all be going straight into quarantine, especially from the states, the way Trumpy is dealing with it is eye watering.

I think the BA flights were Gov chartered BA flights bringing people from Peru ?? You seem to have a vision of the RAF that is not there !! London is one of the World Aviation Hubs we can't shut everything down and of Course London is a World Capital.

Did you see the Andrew Marr show The Dr from St Thomas's said she had never heard of NHS staff reusing PPE like Marr indicated, or that they had run out of Ventilators or Critical Care Beds!!

The World is still turning, people die every day in Italy/Spain? China/ oh and here as well. None of us know how many people are dying from the Corona Virus or are dying with the Corona Virus.

Not sure if we are all getting a little Paranoid driven by a media with an insatiable appetite for something to say 24/7

True to a degree but as I said the flights were from New York, hardly a safe zone. As mercurf says have a look on flight radar, it is frightening on two counts - firstly that they are vastly reduced but still a lot of them and secondly it is even more apparent how many there are usually, which is contributing very significantly to the next world problem.

Have a look at flightradar24.com Flights seem to be less than usual this side of the atlantic but the internal flights in the USA are frightening!

Also, quite a lot of flights coming into London (and Amsterdam) are probably connecting flights & passengers only disembark to get onto another flight.

Hi

I use Flight Tracker on a regular basis I live on the route from Gatwick/ Heathrow for flights going South also my Local Airport has lots of BA Planes parked on the runway,

I believe quite a lot of flights are Cargo flying in Fruit and other Foods, and repatriating UK nationals ,

Why there was ll those people in Peru god only knows !!

I was looking at the arrivals at Heathrow this morning, but I take your point about the people in Peru. Maybe this is the sort of thing we will need to look at when the dust has settled, people take themselves off on these "adventures" (I heard at least some of them had been to the rainforest) and then throw a wobbler when its goes TU, expecting the Government to bail them out tomorrow. Where is the travel insurance company in this? Anything could happen in these places it is at your own risk, it's just part of the "world has gone mad" roundabout we are on. Branson makes me laugh, one minute he is talking about barmy "holidays" in space, now he wants the government to bail out his Airline!

Crazy. I have tracked the spread of this virus daily . Except the first cases that came from China, which seemed to have been contained. Most of the initial contamination was from Italy or people in contact with those that returned from their skiing trips, except 2 from Iran. Impossible to track after that due to non reporting of source of infection. This situation is frightening, law and order is breaking down in Italy, organised raids on food shops, people are running out of food and Russia have sent warships to the English channel.

London may be a World Aviation Hub but what use is that when we could have stopped the importation of this virus and chaos by banning all flights. The spread of this virus seems to be in wealthy countries, Africa does not appear to be as bad as the developed world because of the free movement of people around the world, unchecked in developed countries.

I really don't know where this will all end. Did anyone see the TV series in the 1970's "The Survivors" that program had a remarkable resemblance the the present situation, fiction of course.

Also where are they going to get the money to pay for this mess, raid peoples savings I expect, which is what Greece did in 2008.

just have to keep cheerful.

Approximately 300,000 Chinese live in Italy and there are strong links between the Italian fashion industry (mainly in the North) and cheaper clothes production in China. And where do people go at Christmas?

I think I am correct in saying the City with the Largest Chinese population outside China is Toronto !!!

I agree lateguitarist. I did not see the program but have seen cats on other programs, in other Asian countries, on a rotissary like chickens in this country. Disgusting. We were to blame for the CJD outbreak a few years ago but we tackled that and contained it. The world banned our meat imports for years, perhaps we should do the same with Chinese imports until they clean up their act.

You might find this interesting, seems we have a lot of sorting out to do. Basically if you mess with mother nature sooner or later she is going to bite your ass:
