Are the nhs allowing non coronavirus patients to die

I wish i could join in with the adulation currently being heaped on our NHS but unfortunately i cant. I feel as a family we are being let down and my mother has been given up for dead already. After repeated calls to local GP and hns helplines the top and bottom of it is that my mother is being left to die at home. She is old yes, she has dementia and other underlying conditions such as heart failure and COPD which would sugest she is in the extreamly vulnerable group during this time of self isolation but was left in her home in a very potentially unsafe environment. She has not been eating regually for sometime, she sleeps upto 3 days at a time, and recently in the past week or so she has deteriorated noticeably. I understand we are in difficult times, dont get me wrong the people, both doctors and nurses i have spoken to have been compassionate over the phone, but i still feel with hands on assistance she could be saved. I write this at a time when she is still with us and responsive to questions, but neither has the strength or mental capacity to act . This i believe is where the NHS or social care should be stepping in. But we feel abandoned. She was a strong independent woman who i believe deserves better than this. So now i watch each day as she grows weaker while the nhs do nothing, sure their busy but that does not make it right.

Hi Baz

You sound as though your in the most difficult of places, and I am sure a lot of us would like to help. but like you there is nothing we can offer. ( only good wishes ) Your mother is probably in the best place, surroundings which are familiar as opposed to a busy Hospital Ward. Would a hospice be able to offer you assistance I don't know just clutching at straws which I would do in your situation. It sounds as though you may have accepted the fact that there is not a lot that can be done, as like a lot of us your mum can't be fixed only made comfortable. Sorry

Hello Baz, I really feel for you in this but I am truly not sure from how you have described things it would be so different previous to the Corona Virus situation. I too had lost my elderly mother in a very, very similar condition to yours some years ago. She was in her 90's and even though her GP did come and visit it became clear to her and us as family that this was a point where nothing more could b e done. It would have been unkind to try desperate means that would end in Mum and us enduring the pain and anguish for longer. The only positive benefit of the medical professional being present was to reassure us that all that could be done had been done. She could not even administer a higher dosage of pain relief to speed a release just made Mum as comfortable as possible while she slipped away over the next few days. I really do understand how you, like me, can feel desperate to do your best for your Mum but that today the NHS is totally overloaded as it was even before COVID-19 turned upon us. My thoughts are with you at this awful time.

Yes indeed!! Seems to be there is only one illness now....disgraceful. The NHS only doing a job and should remember lots of people besides cosy- toes infected (my name for the VIRUS) are in need
