I had my daughter via c section 11 months ago. Since having the operation I’ve suffered ectopic beats. I’ve been doctors several times about it and been dismissed and told it’s anxiety. No one actually listened to my chest just said it’ll be anxiety. A doctor had me go for an ecg which came up clear and I didn’t experience any during it. Fast forward to last week I went to see the doctor as I felt the palpitations were worse and asked him to actually listen to my heart. They’ve discovered I’ve got a heart murmur and now I’m awaiting an echogram that I’ll have in a month. I’m left worried, I’m only 28 and I have a young baby. This long wait certainly doesn’t help

Hello and welcome to the forum! My initial concerns about heart disease were not taken seriously (your numbers are good) until I developed angina (shocking family history of heart disease). However, look on the bright side you are now on the radar.
Two friends suffer from ectopic beats. Both are controlled by medication and avoiding triggers. Triggers include coffee, alcohol, chocolate and spicy foods. If you have them regularly it may be worth eliminating to see if things improve.
As regards the heart murmur these may never need treatment. I know someone diagnosed with a murmur over fifty years ago. It has never affected them and they recently did some 5k park runs. Obviously they hope it will remain stable for another 50 years but accept that one day surgery may be needed. The echocardiogram will tell if treatment is needed.
Thanks so much for your reply. It’s really appreciated. I know I’m getting ahead of myself but I’m just so worried something will happen to me, I’ll be glad when I’ve got this scan over it so I know what I’m dealing with. It’s the waiting that’s the worst. It’s frustrating when you’re not taken seriously I had to rebook to see a different doctor due to the one who diagnosed the heart murmur just kept laughing which really didn’t help things
Hi brightly I really don’t think you need worry enjoy your baby if anything was to worry about you would be seeing a cardiologist next week I assure you. Take carexxx
Thank you very much Christina for your reply. That’s very true what you’ve said and something I need to put into perspective. I just hope nothing bad comes back from the scan x
Hi Brighty19
As Michael has already said it is possible to live with a heart murmur for years without needing any treatment.
In the past every pregnant woman had their heart listened to by a doctor during their pregnancy.
You may have had a murmur before you were pregnant. During pregnancy your blood volume increases and you can develop a ' functional ' harmless murmur.
Most usually disappear after pregnancy.
I have had this type of murmur due to an increase in the volume of blood going through my heart and my Cardiologist said it had temporarily effected one of my heart valves. He actually let me listen to the murmur myself. It's now gone.
As Michael says you are under the radar and an echocardiogram will help the Cardiologist to check that everything is okay.
The wait for any test and then the results is the worst part. The doctor's less than sympathetic reaction didn't help you I am sure.
Hopefully all goes well
Thank you for your reassuring advice. I’m hoping it’ll be a murmur that just needs general monitoring and isn’t anything serious. Here’s hoping. Fingers crossed x
