Need advice about future op with mechanical valve

Hi All

First post here, I do have high blood pressure and have had for quite some time, however I am asking for advice about my Mom, she has several health issues that have caused her to need a knee replacement. The relevant part here is that about 5 or so (could be more) years ago she had a tear in a valve that needed repairing and had a mechanical valve fitted, she had high blood pressure for quite some years before this happened and there is heart disease in our family.

I am not sure of the exact diagnosis etc but she is adamant that she is not having this knee op because she is scared of going back into hospital after the heart op and thinks that she will die during the op.

I am not being dismissive of her worries as I am very nervous of hospitals and would also be scared in this situation, but without this knee op she could end up immobile before long. Does anyone have any insight or similar stories/situation to this?

I would love to know more and would be great to give my mom more information about this.

Hi, sorry to hear about your mum’s situation. I’m afraid I don’t have any answers but would suggest in the first instance phoning the BHF nurses on Monday. They may be able to offer reassurance or point you in the right direction. Their number is 0300 330 3311.
