Snoring

Morning all! Prior to my hubby's hf and af his snoring could raise the dead, but nothing now, which should be sweet relief! However some of the noises he does make in his sleep I find distressing and wonder if he is struggling to breathe. But now, I am thinking that maybe he is trying to snore again but it doesn't come out right. Don't know the mechanics of snoring and whether they are impaired by hf. Any suggestions, anyone?

Has your husband had a sleep study? If he snores a lot and has AF there’s a good chance he has sleep apnea. When oxygen levels drop and the CO2 levels increase it can put the heart into AF.

Sadly I snore, have done for a while. I wondered if it was exacerbated by Verapamil. I no longer take that as the side effects after 4/5 years were too much. Had been ok for months until I had AF May bank holiday.

I have an app called ‘SnoreLab’ it records snoring and intensity. Since being in bisoprolol & Flecainaide the scores increase dramatically 😳 I mentioned it to the cardiologist who said nothing to confirm or deny the possibility the drugs are making it worse 😳 I’m not happy to say the least. I was thinking of s sleep clinic but seems difficult if it’s the drugs.

I had a sleep test in January. What it showed was that whilst most of my sleep was was fine when I went into REM sleep I would stop breathing. I was diagnosed with mild sleep apnea (borderline moderate). My sleep specialist said if I didn’t have AF he wouldn’t be too worried but because of the AF it needed to be treated so I now have a CPAP machine.

How are you getting on with it? Is is NHS?

I’m in Australia so we have a different system here. The CPAP is fine. I was worried as I’m very claustrophobic but the mask I have is a soft tube that sits below my nose. The air hose comes from the top of my head and I can lie on my stomach or sides and turn over without any dramas.

My Husband was very similar to yours, his snoring was horrendous but since his HA not a sausage it's fantastic!

But he has been asked if he struggles to breathe on his back which he doesn't but if he slept on his side then he'd struggle and would make a lot of noise I suspect

I was also prone to snoring a little, but since my AVR it's much worse, and at times it can only be described as snorting. The solution in our house is separate bedrooms! It's lucky we have the space.
