Regenerative Medicine for Heart Failure

Hi,

I'm new to this group, I've joined in the hope that I might be able to find information as to whether stem cell regenerative medicine is available to treat heart failure in the UK.

Presently I'm finding that the information available is confusing, I find that that there has been a very well organised clinical trials programme running at a group of London NHS hospitals and funded by a charity the aim of which is to roll out the procedure as an accepted NHS treatment. This programme appears to have been successful since it has treated large numbers of patients and seems to be reaching its conclusion.

There also appears to have been small groups of trials taken place across the UK , again supported by the NHS in partnership with a private French company which also has been successful.

However when I enquire through the mainstream establishment groups the answer always appears to be that "we're still no further than being in the laboratory stage".

Can anyone shed any light on the true progress of this regenerative therapy?.

Regards,

Here in the States the Cleveland Clinic has been working years on stem cell research to regenerate the heart. Their trials still haven’t resulted in high success rates.

There was a group of doctors making the rounds in the States offering stem cell regeneration. Went to one of their seminars in Florida ( some call our State the Sunshine State others call in God’s Waiting Room). In any case they claimed they would draw your blood for 6 months then send it to Israel for processing, send back the serum and with a long syringe needle inject your heart.

One chap went for it and 6 months later he had the procedure and they found his body in the clinic. It was quite the news for months. I believe the promoters are now in a cell somewhere figuring out what went wrong.

Stem cell research continues for a number of diseases but I think it will be years before they can determine whether it has any real merits or not.

They just have to keep doing the research. Wasn't too long ago a transplant was unheard of, or an LVAD or BIVAD

So I believe there is hope in this.

Hi Milkfairy,

Thanks for the reply, and yes Prof Mathur heads up the team who are delivering the successful therapy at the London NHS hospitals but the aspect which doesn't add up is why are there so many sceptics, including my own cardiologist !.How is it that the goods are being delivered while all others are still pondering in the lab, or is he just ahead of the curve.

Problem is that it's difficult to keep informed as to progress on this project as it really is a beacon of hope.

I agree.

I live with a poorly understood and recognised type of angina.

We refer to ourselves as unicorns in fairyland on the forum.

You could email Prof Mathur yourself.

His email address is on the link I sent you.
