Heart Problems and Thyroid Disease

Please take our survey which is about the NHS guidelines proposed for thyroid disease. Many patient's with thyroid problems suffer from heart disease and their treatment needs to be comprehensive. This draft takes a simplistic view of the disease and does not advance current treatment

I find this an interesting Post. Not so long ago, I went to the Optician and she asked if I suffered with any Thyroid problems. I said, not that I was aware of. She then wrote to my Doctor. Had a Phone call from Surgery, not long after, and had to have Thyroid Blood Tests. They came back normal. I didn't know there was a link between Thyroid and Heart problems which I do have. NB: May take the Survey later!

Hi lidoplace. In response to your question. I have not read the link yet but I was born with heart disease and in 2013 I was diagnosed with under-active thyroid and been on pills ever scince. From that point I think my heart condition got worse but hey only my opinion.

I had a partial thyroidectmy when I was 28, took carbimazole for three years afterwards and up until I was in my late fifties everything seemed ok. I started having some odd symptoms and discovered that my overactive thyroid had returned, after a scuffle with meds, four years ago the decision was taken to have another partial thyroidectomy, which didn’t work, so last year I had to have radioactive iodine to ‘kill it off’. During that time I was having a lot of palpitations and feelings of anxiety for apparently no reason at all , so had a loop recorder fitted which resulted in me having a pacemaker fitted last year. As this survey as now closed, I would be interested to know what type of questions were in it and whether any of my problems have arisen from having an over active thyroid.

Your history and timing is very similar to mine although I didnt need to take carb after my partial op, I had RAI late 40s as further surgery wasn't an option. I now have heart problems and heading towards needing a pacemaker.

I did fill in the survey but there was nothing directly relating to heart problems included in the questions.

I was told by the cardiologist that my particular heart condition wasn't related to lifestyle, so that ruled out my eating habits, which are pretty healthy but down to the electrics in my heart, whatever that’s supposed to mean and makes me think whether it is down to not being treated quickly enough for my thyroid. My endocrinologist appointments are a bit of a joke as once I have been given an appt, it is always, without exception put back, for instance I was supposed to see the consultant endo in July and that has been put back three times, I’m now looking at a December appt, which is very frustrating and I am thinking of going private if it’s put back again, as I don’t know why I’m feeling this rubbish, whether it’s the thyroid or my pacemaker. One thing is for sure I felt better than this pre pm days, so I really want to know what makes me feel so awful.
