Weight loss after HF diagnosis

Hi all,

2 weeks after HF diagnosis with EF 40%, I have lost about 9-10 Ilbs in weight, should I be concerned about this?, I have been told to keep an eye on any significant weight loss/gain.

I have changed my diet quite a bit (lots more fruit and veg and much less fatty stuff) I have hardly had any alcohol (used to drink fairly regularly) so I would have thought this weight loss is pretty normal given the fact that my diet has changed quite significantly plus I am taking on less fluid daily and I have been told that I should not drink more than 2-3 litres a day.

With all that has changed how can I not lose weight? I should add that I was probably 1 1/2 stone overweight before the diagnosis

Rapid weight gain is normally the problem as it can be fluid retention.

Weight loss is normally only a cardiac problem in HF patients if it's considerable with a lack of appetite or nausea.

Weight loss which is explicable by diet change is unlikely to be anything to worry about. If you keep losing weight unintentionally after you have reached a good BMI then it's worth talking to your GP / cardiac nurse.

All the best

Respected Bigredhear,

Loosing 9-10 lbs within 2 weeks would be due loss of fluid weight. Are you on diuretics? This may bring down your weight by flushing out the salt & extra fluids through urine which is good for HF patients.

A portion of weight loss is attributable to loss of appetite also.

However it is better to reduce our weight which inturn will help our heart to pump easily.

If it is nearer to BMI nothing to worry provided that the weight loss is not unintentional.

All the best

Hi all,

Yes I am on furosemide and spirolactalone both if which reduce the fluid, also my diet has changed a lot, I could probably do with losing another 6-7 pounds so I am sure this is all beneficial.

Thanks everyone for all the responses since I have joined, i am finding this forum really helpful

Big love to everyone x
