Ill Health Retirement from the NHS

Hi everyone

As many others here I am on a bit of a journey with my dicky ticker. Following the failure of my CABG ( surgery July 18) and recent stents and the extent of the progression of my heart disease over a short 7 months (as discovered from my recent angiogram) I have decided to think about Ill Health Retirement. I work in a stressful job in the NHS but have a reasonable pension.

Has anyone else successfully managed to get this on the grounds of their heart condition?

Thanks so much

Liz

Hi Billyjean

I took ill health retirement.

I was awarded permanent incapacity.

Human resources and occupational health give evidence. You will need to give OH copies of all your clinic letters and discharge summarises from hospital.

You also have section to complete about your working career and how your illness effects you.

You need to discuss this with OH first.

Perhaps speak to your professional body or union representative for advice too.

Mine had very little experience so I ended up completing my section without much support.

All the managers were stunned when I was awarded permanent incapacity with the comment. 'Oh are you that ill then'

I found found applying for a PIP far more challenging.

Good luck

Hi Liz. I am sorry to hear about your health it sounds as though you have had a torrid time. I think You will need support to navigate the process so I think it would be helpful for you to contact your union rep. I think they will help guide you through this as it can be intense and their support will be invaluable. Look after yourself and take care. Zena x

Hi Liz.

The NHS Pensions scheme don't make it easy to retire on the grounds of ill health. You may find this of some help:

nhsbsa.nhs.uk/sites/default...

As others have said Occupational Health is a good starting point. You might also consider having a one off appointment with a good employment solicitor. It's also a good idea to get your consultant and GP onboard to the idea of you taking early retirement.

Good luck and hope you are able to enjoy retirement like me 10 year now retired from the NHS.

Regards. Ron.

Thanks so much everyone for your kind words and guidance. It does come with some sadness at the thought of leaving this amazing organisation we call the NHS. I have worked in it for 37 years and although I have given a lot I have also received plenty back. Hope I can turn this round to make it into a new chapter.

Thanks again x
