I suffered with restless legs before the HA and found that having a banana everyday seemed to alleviate the problem . Restless Legs syndrome can be associated with low potassium levels. However talking to my GP this week about painful lower legs, he has said that this can be due to the Statins. I am having a blood test tomorrow and one of the things they are going to test for is a enzyme which can be present and the cause of the painful/uncomfortable legs.

That's interesting, i had low potassium, when bloods done in A & E week or two ago and had drip up etc, was advised to eat more bananas, oramges and tomatoes. But do have restless legs in the evenings and remember used to drive my Mum crazy.

Thankyou for that.

For most people the restlessness comes on in the evening . The other thing that has helped in the past is a wheat bag or warm hot water bottle on my legs . Initially after having the HA it seemed to disappear and I have wondered if somehow it is a precursor to Heart problems.

Reading one or two messages on here, does almost seem as though it could possibly be a precursor. Another thing i have noticed is I only cough when I have Angina ? Will certainly try the wheat bag though, as I usually end up going to bed with electric blanket on.

Ah I will try bananas, I eat quite a lot of cherry tomatoes, I have got low blood pressure though... wether that’s anything to do with restless legs

Um interesting, my mum used to have them. So maybe it’s hereditary

Interesting about the bananas... I used to get restless legs a lot before my HA but less so since I changed my diet... I eat an oat based muesli and a banana every morning and my legs have been great. The one thing that has always made them worse is white wine - but red is better for the heart anyway 😉. Bill

Hi. Please let me know the results of your blood test and what the enzyme is . My partner has had terrible problems with pains in his legs since his operation. He has had Doppler tests and recently an MRI on his back to detect the cause. He is not on statins. Thank you.

Will do 🙂

Like a number of respondents, I used to get restless leg syndrome before I had my triple CABG, but I cannot recall a single event since. Maybe something in the dietary changes I have made (though no bananas for me) or possibly the drugs too.

Low magnesium can be another contributory factor. It's not well absorbed from oral supplements so you need a spray for the skin or a good long soak in Epsom salts.
