Flu

Hi, I was diagnosed with left branch bundle block last year. I have full blown flu at the moment and cough and was just wondering if I should get checked out by my GP? I'm keen to let it run its course without seeing the GP but wasn't sure if the flu could be damaging to my heart.

Hello Rubytues - like you last Fri I quickly developed full blown flu. NHS guidance suggests asking GP / Pharmacist for advice. As far as I can tell the only option is to take an anti viral like Relenza or Tamiflu if your heart condition is unstable although in practice I am not sure they are prescribed much. They are best taken within 48 hrs of onset of symptoms but do have there own range of side effects. We are all different but I decided to take regular paracetamol to lower temp which has only just returned to normal with only 2 paracetamol taken today. Lots of hot drinks and fluids. I have developed a hacking cough and feel this is putting a strain on me with the sheer effort and lack of sleep. The thing to watch out for is developing a secondary infection like pneumonia and pericarditis although I am sure you won't just be aware. If you are at all concerned that you are not improving after 3 - 4 days or you improve then relapse get immediate medical advice - like a telephone appointment with your GP. Get as much rest as possible and hope you start to feel better soon. If you can sleep in virtually upright position it will help with your cough and gently inhale over a bowl of boiling water. Try and resist coughing if you can until there is anything to cough up - if there is do 2 or 3 gentle deep breaths and cough on exhalation as it's more productive at getting rid of phlegm.

Thanks for your advice, especially about inhaling, that makes sense. Hope you feel better soon.

I think call the GP and see what they say. If in doubt, ask the professionals! Hope you recover soon xx

Thanks Laura, yes, it makes sense doesn't it?

Whilst flu can be very nasty the biggest danger is secondary infections like bronchitis or pneumonia as your body's defences will b e at a low already. I agree you should ring your GP or 111 if unavailable as us hearties are at higher risk. Ozzy Osbourne has been hospitalised with complications from the flu. Hope you feel better soon!
