Hi, all the best for Friday. Get your stuff organised to take in with you. As well as the usual loose clothes, slippers etc, I took in my Kindle, MP3, tablet, puzzle book, basically something to while away the hours! Earplugs are vital otherwise you won’t get any sleep - Glenfields actually provide them if needed. Get things organised for when you come home, such as a v-shaped pillow or a rolled up duvet, as it is really hard to lie flat when you first get home.
I know it’s frightening facing the prospect of open heart surgery, but remember to your surgeon it is a normal op and he/she will have done loads of them. It’s easy to say ‘don’t worry’ but it’s easier said than done.
You will feel like you have been run over by a bus the first couple of days so take the painkillers and don’t be afraid to ask for more - I have back and shoulder problems so I was taking praracetamol and codeine and at times morphine (after the first op I was going n tramadol). You can start cutting back as you recover but don’t suffer initially because you won’t want to move if you are in pain.
If you look through the posts on here you will see lots of posts from people like me who have been through open heart surgery. If you have any particular questions either before or after your op, then ask away, I’m sure between us we’ll be able to answer any questions you have - there is no point worrying if it is something we can help with.
Keep us posted.

Hello, I think others on here have previously suggested practice getting in and out if bed and in and out if chairs without using your arms! If you can do these it means your chest will have an easier time healing up after surgery. Hope all goes well for you.
Hi Menhennet, I had aortic valve replacement surgery on August 3rd and last Friday I started playing walking football again.
Before the operation my surgeon told me that if I am positive I will heal quicker. So remain positive, also when I was admitted I decided to try not to worry and just go with the flow, it also helps if you keep your sense of humour. On our ward we had loads of laughter before and after the operation.
Be positive, follow the advice and you will fly through it. Good luck Menhennet ❤
Hi Menhennet, all the very best for Friday. I can only reiterate the advice already given. If it helps at all I’m 11 weeks post op and have found the help here invaluable.
