Hi, EF is the abbreviation for ejection faction, it's the rate at which the blood is ejected from your heart. Normal EF is between 55 to 70 I believe. An EF of 40-45 is not too bad, my husbands is 30 & has been for a few years & he's doing OK. I'm sure someone else will be able to answer you better than me regarding the medapical etc, but my husband also has this & I believe it's referring to your heart walls & is quite common. If you look through my posts I think someone answered my questions bout the self same thing. Hope this helps.
Also, there is a heart failure charity called Pumping Marvellous who I highly recommend for info. They also have a closed Facebook group where you can find lots of help, support & advise & can help with any questions you may have Including NICE guidelines for the medical care you should receive
Didn't your specialist or doctor explain when you were given the results?
No I got it from my gp who is not a cardiologist.
I hope you find the answer you are looking on this second post.
I found that you can look up most of these terms by googling. Provided it is in plain English you're OK! The NHS website is very good. I have an EF of 45% which I was told was a moderate impairment. I lead an active life for a 70 year old - so far so good. Live for the moment! Can you contact a specialist nurse or cardiologist if the GP is not able to explain? Good luck.
Hi Carltonv1,
Left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) is the measurement of how much blood is being pumped out of the left ventricle of the heart (the main pumping chamber) with each contraction.
Your EF is expressed as a percentage. An EF that is below normal can be a sign of heart failure. If you have heart failure and a lower-than-normal (reduced), your EF helps your doctor know how severe your condition is.
A completely normal ejection fraction is usually considered to be above 50%. Hypokinetic refers to limited movement of an areas of heart muscle.
I would recommend meeting with your doctor to discuss this with you. They can go over any additional tests and treatment you may need.
Take care,
Emily
Thanks Emily. See a cardiologist tomorrow 👍
