Hi

My son underwent OHS in 2015 at the age of 15.

He was diagnosed with aortic valve abnormality ( leaky heart valve) I have since found out his paternal uncle has the same condition ( in his 70's) I have 2 other sons, who have never been tested .. Do you think I need to get them checked out? Or am I being paranoid? Thanks x

I don’t think your paranoid get them checked out if anything it will put your mind at ease ... I have 3 kids getting them checked out my 16 year old has been checked out turned he has a hole in his heart and my youngest have still to be checked by paediatric cardiologist ...♥️

I would get them checked, even if just to set your mind at rest.

Hi I've just had Aortic Value replaced 8wks ago, and was told I must have had a defect at birth and it gave up 4 days before my 57 th Birthday, worked it out it was from my paternal aunt, so I suggested that my 2 brothers, their children, my cousin and 2nd cousins get checked out as this does not show up on an ECG only by a doctor listening by stethoscope.

So no your not being paranoid, your siding on the air of caution.

Best wishes

That must have been so frightening for you !! Hope you are recovering well x

My son had no symptoms at all .. but because we knew he had it from the age of 3 .. he was checked every year at Great Ormond Street ❤️

Hi there - sorry to hear about your son needing surgery at such a young age. While we don't fully understand the genetics links for these sorts of heart conditions yet, what we do know is that it's more likely people within the family will have a heart condition - although, interestingly, not always the same one.

It's worth your other children having a scan of their hearts to see how they've developed, and this is usually done using an echocardiogram: bhf.org.uk/heart-health/tes...

I hope this helps.

Take care,

Chris

Thanks Chris.

I have booked an appointment for both of them at the Doctors. Hopefully all will be ok.

Yes, do get them checked. It can only help, knowing early, if there is a problem. I hope not, of course. But better to know.

More tests .. MRI etc etc

I honestly hoped the repair would last longer than 2 years 😢

They will keep him at Great Ormond St until he's 18 then move him to Barts

That must be so disappointing. Hope there's better news for you all on the horizon. Lots of love x
