Hello I am new to this community and would like to know if anyone can help me understand the effects of an aortic dissection. 5 years ago I had a triple bypass all went very well until my ascending aorta ruptured. It was a very close call but with some excellent surgeons I am here to tell the tale. A year ago I began suffering with tight chest and shortness of breath , I thought it was more heart problems but after more investigations it seems the aorta has dissected all the way down but I'm told it is stable. Applying for travel insurance recently 1 question started me worrying.....was I having trouble walking? At the time of application all was well but I have had trouble since...mobility is getting worse. While travelling I had to resort to wheel chair at airport and using stick frequently. My question is....does anyone know more on the subject to give me some idea just what may be happening...if anything. Thank you for taking the time to read this I look forward to your feedback.

Hi Maggielloyd
Welcome to the community and thanks for sharing your story.
We have a section about aortic dissection in our Diseases of the Aorta factsheet which mentions that people can feel pain in the lower extremities. This would normally need checking out by a doctor as soon as you can. There are of course other possible causes for the discomfort you are experiencing but it's best to rule out a more urgent cause in light of your previous experience.
You may also like to think about getting an assessment for physiotherapy and it might also be worth considering a needs assessment from social services regarding your mobility if things are getting worse. You can arrange this through the GP.
Below is a link to the factsheet which you may find useful along with a link to a list of insurance companies that our supporters have found helpful.
