Can I get pregnant with a ten year old coil?

It may sound a silly question but was the coil a 5 year or ten year coil ? Was it a hormonal coil ( Mirena ) ? If it was a ten year copper coil, do you know when it is due to expire ? What age are you ?

I am 45 and the coil was put in 10 years ago. I’m not sure what type it is

Ok so we will need to presume it is a ten year copper IUD. Usually they issue you with a card which will give an expiry date. Do you have that ? If not you should try to contact the service that placed it in they will hopefully have a record.

the advice for women over 40 is that they require adequate contraception until they have not had a period for 2 years under 50, or one year over 50. So if the coil has indeed lasped, you would be advised to have it replaced , or an alternative form of contraception. And to use condoms in the interim .

I am sorry to hear that. I think you have posted on here regarding these issues . Please follow the advice Adhari already gave you .

"The risk of pregnancy is dependent on a number of factors, including your age, when in relation to your menstrual cycle you were assaulted as well as the longevity of the IUD. If the coil is < 2 years overdue (i.e. 10y + 2) then it may still have some contraceptive activity."

so you need to find out when it actually expires.
