Induction with IVF?

Hi there,

I’m 31 weeks tomorrow with my IVF miracle.

I’ve been reading a study from last year that says IVF babies are often inducted.

Does anyone have any experience of this?

It seems to vary from hospital to hospital. I wasn’t and treated like anyone else. My LG was 12 days late xx

My hospital does have a policy of inducing IVF babies if they’ve not arrived by their due date.

My obstetrician explained that the risk of still birth in a ‘normal’ pregnancy starts to increase at 42 weeks, whereas with IVF the increased risk starts slightly earlier around 40 weeks.

From reading previous posts about this it’s quite controversial, and I’ve a friend who had IVF who was allowed to go well over her due date so it definitely varies! X

I’d rather not have one but if I’m recommended would rather know all reasons and risks xx

It seems to vary depending on where you are. My hospital wouldn't let me go over 41 weeks and from 40 weeks I had a check up every other day, bb was born at 40+6. Hope the rest of your pregnancy goes smoothly and you're not too uncomfortable xxx

I was induced at 39 weeks because the amniotic fluid got dried up, after 3 days of induction the cervix weren't opening and I ended up with Cs.

I was offered to be induced on my due date but the baby was happy so I opted not to be. After a week we decided as there were no signs of any change that we would start induction. Another week later and no further progress, we had a csection and my 10lb2oz baby was born x

Each area differs in its policy. My hospital induce at 40 weeks. Apparently there is some evidence that for IVF babies the placenta can stop working at 40 weeks. Not sure why.

One thing to think about if you do opt for induction is what 40 weeks actually is. My IVF date and hospital due date were a week apart with my second so if I’d accepted induction on my hospital due date my baby would only have been 39 weeks.

Yes that’s a good point! My hospital took the IVF date as a given so I guess that’s good.

Strange isn’t it that the ‘national’ heath service varies so much!

I was told from the start that the hospital policy was to not let IVF babies go over their due date due to placenta’s degrading faster after fertility treatment.

They also said they would do monthly growth scans from 28 weeks to check placenta degradation and said I would have a small baby....I loved the extra scans but none of the rest was of that was true, placenta worked perfectly and the little chubster measured consistently on the 97th percentile 😅.

I was very happy that he was taken out at 39 weeks though, if I’d gone over due date he’d have been a ten pounder xx

I was offered a sweep from 39 weeks and an induction from 40. I opted to have a sweep at 41+2 but went into labour the day before. My hospital were happy to let me wait and I never felt pressured into an induction. Good luck!

My pregnancy was treated like a normal one. They was happy for me to go the 12 days over, however I was induced anyway due to a drop in growth xx

It’s all your choice. You have the right to ask for it if you want it or refuse it if you don’t xxxx

my consultant said I could go 12 days over, the hospital in the city rules were to induce on due date so it really varies. In the end I was induced as our boy was measuring big and they we worried he would get stuck xx

My ivf clinic advised me to ensure I was induced on my due date, I think because with ivf the due dates are very accurate whereas natural conception they can be a bit out. I informed my midwife straight away of my clinics advice and my hospital were happy to book me in for induction on my due date however my baby arrived 10 days early. I was having weekly growth scans from 28 weeks so they booked my induction in then x
