Hi Pommigranate

I am delighted you find the site informative.

It is very easy when you have a chronic medical condition to put every symptom you experience down to that. I don't think an inability to breathe is a symptom of ataxia and I would strongly advise going to see your GP to have it investigated further.

Best Wishes

Sounds like I'll be paying a visit to my Dr. Or would a quieter. more oxygen filled (less traffic)environment help?

I do feel if I need to increase my intake for any reason I can't. This isn't normally a problem as I am in my wheelchair.

Don't get too involved yet Harriet, my history is very complicated.

I am only aware of breathing changes first thing in the morning when I have been lying down.

Thinking about it is not really difficulties as it goes during the day.It is more changes.I have noticed it for nearly two years.. As Harry says go to the doctor for tests.

I have had CA for nearly 6 years.

Don't think it is Ataxia related but you should go to your GP for peace of mind.

Hello I find my breathing changes but have recently found out why, I have got myself into such a panic without realising it. I am trying my best to remain calm when in a situation I am not comfortable with. I do agree you should get I check by your gp xx

If I talk alot, I find my breathing is compromised and I have to stop or take a deep breath but otherwise not. I imagine the diaphragm has muscles which get unhappy. Neta

With reference to breathing fears. I experience that when resting I have a spongy feeling when exhaling, as if I must have been smoking 40 cigarettes daily. A speech therapist from NES, when this was mentioned, doubted any ataxia connection.

So a little self appraisement. I think that after 30 yrs of running a business that demanded (?) that I set an example as to the physical side, my body misses that as a daily workout. Muscles, tendons, etc no longer challenged are fading and lungs no longer stretched are complaining. An indirect consequence of my condition perhaps?

Ken.......... trying to understand my pain.

funny how self diagnosies can be so similar

Hello Pommigranite

I too have breathing problems. My speech and language therapist says it is to do with the intake of air. I have problems at night with no warning, but at least I know what the problem is. You don't, the advise to see your GP is good and you should.

Take care

During the day, I cough a lot when taking deep breathes. I agree with Fifa, as it has to do with the intake of air. I was diagnosed with sleep apnea at the same time as ataxia (10 years ago) and use a C-Pap machine at night. From what I've heard and read, many people with ataxia suffer from sleep apnea (you stop breathing several times while asleep, due to throat closing, as muscles relax). My C-Pap machine blows constant air to keep breathing pathway open. Oxygen deprivation is not good for the brain or heart, etc. You might want to check with your doctor regarding the possibility of sleep apnea. Just a thought...,;o)

I have breathing problems but not when asleep. Due to the high levels of concentration when doing most physical things I breath very deeply. I am trying to control my breathing as keep it more normal as otherwise my head spins even more - similar to a panic attack so too much oxygen to the brain; I am working on this with my physio. Prob doesn't really help with your problem though
