Hello

Does Ataxia UK offer physiotherapy to help towards correcting posture and helping with walking/balance? And if so costs?

TIA

Lynn

Or a list of physios by area specialising in neuro progressive disorders. All the members could contribute contact details for a professional they found knowledgable and helpful. And the same for Speech and Language considering dysphagia,

Hello

I’ve been having targeted physio once a week for 8 months now at a neurological rehabilitation unit

For walking/ balance /etc

They are fantastic and very patient 🤨 but I’m very lucky to be having this support for so long as I’ve read that so many of us have struggled to access this service but it’s definitely worth while if you can get it but I am still struggling but you just keep pushing on.

I really hope you find what you need

NO SURRENDER

When Newcastle Ataxia Centre first opened.. as a Volunteer Support I was shown facilities. It was impressive..there was a physio room with various equipment overseen by a reputable NeuroPhysiotherapist.

But..I never came across anyone who was referred to the facility.

The Ataxia Centre wasn’t open long..Specialist Neurologists relocated to do research, and patients were allocated to various other Neurologists.. not specialising in ataxia.

Thank you! Will chat with my consultant and see what she says. What a shame that no one was referred to the Ataxia Centre in Newcastle for Physiotherapy when the facility was there 😢 x

I have NHS physio every two weeks. It's very helpful for balance and I'm given exercises to do at home. I think it's making some improvement, but you can't expect miracles. This is the third time I've had it over the last five years, after being referred by my neurologist. I was diagnosed in 2006.

In the US, Kaiser offers Physical Therapy, either at their local facility which has equipment, or, if you have mobility issues getting to a facility, like me, they subcontract out to very well-trained therapists who come to your home. I got approved for 2 visits per week, for 2 months. But that's it, then I have to wait a bit and request more. My therapist is very knowledgeable and works me HARD.
