A support group is a good way of meeting others who know exactly how

you feel, you don't have to try to appear 'normal', just be yourself.

For whatever reason, some people don't want to go to support groups.

I found that out when I started Gateshead Newcastle.

Whether it's a preconceived idea that people sit around exchanging

ailments, or simply because they don't feel well enough to make an

awkward journey, I don't know. Of course denial could be the reason.

But then they're not everybody's cup of tea anyway, some people

prefer their own company.

It can be a real boost meeting others face to face, a revelation when

you realise you're not the odd one out. To be able to have a chat with

people who know why speech is difficult, and wait until you have your

say, can make such a difference.

For people who find it difficult to get out and about, just having access

to the internet can be a lifeline. Personally, I don't know how I ever got

by without it

Because of privacy I can understand why we don't have access to each

others contact information.

As a starting point for someone who is housebound. Perhaps by ringing

the nearest support group and explaining why attendance was difficult

for them, would open the door to contact with others.

Dear Pennypoop, I live in the States (Michigan) across the pond! I so wish there was a local support group I could attend, but that's not to be! I'd love to chat with you, but I'm afraid it will only be through this site or email in my case! Anyway, I hope you find a support group or someone to chat with close to you, as this is your desire..., ;o)

Hi February, it would be great to talk to you. I've been to my local ataxia group once or twice, but the venue is a bit awkward as I rely on buses, I prefer talking on a one to one as poor hearing and it was largely people older than myself. I'm 38

Hi wobblybee, like I've said, I've been too the nots branch a couple of times, but it wasn't really me. My hearing makes group conversation difficult and phone calls nearly impossible, so I need email or face to face contact
