Hi Jean

Thank yo for your question.

The ability to keep your body upright when sitting can be compromised in people with cerebellar ataxia. Keeping the body upright requires balance and coordination which as you know are lacking in cerebellar ataxia. My advice would be to speak to your GP or neurologist about this and request a referral to physiotherapy. I think modern1 is correct that you would benefit from some gentle exercise to help strengthen you core muscles.

Best Wishes and Happy New Year.

I tend to lean to the left when sitting. I think ataxia effects us this way, depending on the location of the atrophy in the cerebellum. In my case, my left side is effected more than my right. ;o)

Hello Jeaniebean

This is very common with CA and I agree with the suggestions of excersise and physiotherapy, however it sounds like you would benefit from Occupational Therapy here (sorry I am biased). They can help provide you with seating to maintain support when sitting, maybe along with body positing cushions to help prop you upright.

I always have trouble sitting a upright chairs and tend to fall off them but it is because my muscles are very weak. find some exercises to strengthen your core and this should help
