Some scarring to the bottom of my lungs

Hi all

So after months and months of having a cough I have been told I have some light scarring to the bottom of my lungs due to an infection? Not sure how that causes scars. But these scars are from an x ray I had in January when the hospital said it was ok but my dr today looked again and noticed the scars. So have to have another x ray this week and she’s going to speak with a consultant as to what happens next.

Has anyone had or got this issue? Not sure what to make of it

I think the word scarring is a bit misleading but it's the term often used to explain thickening or fibrous lung tissue. Infections can have this affect on lungs, especially pneumonia (lower tract infection). It means the lungs are less elastic and less efficient in the place where the scarring has occurred.

The new xray will see if there's been any improvement, if there's no improvement or if it is worse (but that's more likely if you're exposed to industrial causes, such as asbestos or other materials). A CT scan can take a closer look, if necessary. There are medications that can help and exercise is often recommended.

My niece has lung scarring and she only found out after a bad car accident. CT scans of her neck & spine picked it up. She has been serious about her exercise for some years and even though she struggles at altitude, she still runs, swims and climbs mountains. Her scarring is permanent, but her exercise regime has definitely helped her. Why did she get scarring in the first place? She had a chest infection and it went untreated for ages as she has this idea that she can battle through without medical help. She did capitulate in the end and a course of antibiotics sorted her out. She's 50 next year, just in case you had imagined a teenager.

All the best with your xray and treatment.
