I’ve had several infections over the last 6 months including pneumonia and influenza, and it’s taken it’s toll on me all through the summer, it’s left me feeling weak and tired all the time , I’ve tried. To do Pulmary Rehab a couple of times but not managed it ,I saw my consultant last week and he suggested ( after ecg &blood tests ) that I start long term antibiotics aszithromicyn ? 1 tablet Monday wednesday and Friday , I took first one last Friday ,then Saturday night I was in bad pain with stomach cramps ,followed by having to poo quite a lot ,,,( sorry ) formed poo ,,,,,but passing every 15/20 minutes always formed but light in colour ,since then I’ve had quite bad lower back pain ,,,,not sure if there’s a connection, just a bit worried , Im aged 73 , diagnosed in 1992 with asthma, and in 2004 with bronchiectasis, i use several inhalers ,ventalin ,Seratide,Respimat, I also take Montelukast, and carbocisteine, my question is ,,,,has anyone else been prescribed Aszithromicyn antibiotic for long term ,did you have any side effects ,and did it help ,thanks for reading my question/post ,I look forward to reading your comments ,

Hello. I have been on this for about 3 years now, Monday, Wednesday and Friday. It always upsets my stomach too. I have mentioned it a number of times to my specialist but he feels the benefits outweigh the stomach issues. I also suffer with IBS so it doesnt take much for something to cause me problems.

Thanks for your speedy response, did you notice any difference in your breathing?

Hi. I've not had as many infections which is good. But Ive still have hospital admissions. My breathing is pretty much the same, good days and lots of very bad ones. But at least I'm my recurrent chest infections are fewer.

Been on this Mon, Weds & Fri for about a year, has kept me out of resus and hosp all over the winter, normally three or four serious admissions per year. Was taken off of it for the summer and straight away picked up an upper airway infection.

Have had no issues with it bowel wise but not being hospitalised for a year has really demonstrated how frequent hosp admissions and high dose steroids wear you down.

Really felt like I had got my life back

Hi Nanny1086. I’ve been on daily azithromycin since 2009/10. A tummy upset for me is pretty normal. I used to take it in the morning but suffered with the stomach cramps. After a bit of trial an error, I’ve found that if I take it just before going to bed that the tummy cramps disappeared. I hope that helps
