Hi guys, brand new here. I was hospitalised over Xmas thanks to a nasty bug that got into my lungs, triggering my first (terrifying) asthma attack. It was undetected until then. I was in for 4 days on oxygen and nebulisers, and was discharged with a hefty bag of inhalers and steroids. Just introducing myself ahead of the million questions I will undoubtedly end up asking as this is all brand new!

Welcome to the group!

Sorry you’ve had such a rubbish time over Christmas hopefully you will find treatment that works for you!

Feel free to ask anything there’s lots of people on here with varying levels of experience and severity of asthma so there will be someone with the answer :)

X

Thank you! I had a couple of meetings with the specialists while I was in there but not enough to explain everything. Hopefully I have my consultant appointment soon. X

Yeah it’s a lot to take in and you will learn as you go along with how your body responds to treatments ect! Have you managed to get a appointment with your gp since coming out of hospital, usually they recommend

you seeing someone within the first few days your out xx

Not yet, its been awful timing with Xmas and new year, I'll be phoning my gp first thing in the morning. I was told to expect a letter from him but I think I'd rather just push myself as my doctors surgery is a bit of a nightmare xx

Yeah give them a ring and say you’re a newly diagnosed asthmatic just been discharged from hospital, don’t be afraid of nagging! Guidelines say you should have a appointment 48-72hours after discharge xx

hi, I was diagnosed last year (I’m 35) after flu followed by a chest infection. I have two children with asthma so really felt at the time that was what was going on but took a while to get the right treatment. If you go to the gp they can give you a peak flow monitor which will help you keep track of your asthma. They will also be able to talk about what treatment you need. I also did a WhatsApp chat with a nurse at asthma uk who are amazing and can give you loads of information and advice. Also be prepared that you may go through a few different inhalers before you find the one that works. This was all a year ago and I’m really well now, in fact I feel healthier than I have for years which makes me think I’ve probably had it for a while before I was diagnosed! Please feel free to ask questions x

Maybe once the infection clears up your asthma will subside? Personally I think people that have it chronic get it in childhood. Don't know all the possibilities others may know about infection causing onset
