2 year old asthma attack but trigger unknown

Hi Everyone

My two year old had an asthma attack but the signs were not “typical”. There was no coughing, wheezing, no cold or runny nose. In fact they went to bed happy but woke up with very very short breaths and a high temperature. I had to take them to hospital. Could a virus have caused this? Or condensation in sleeping room? I will buy a humidifier. This was the first attack but I am surprised this does not occur after colds and coughs in my case. It was out of the blue.

All is well now and recovered quickly.

Any helpful advice would be welcome. Thank you

Just been looking at your information and see that this has never happened before. In short yes a virus could well have caused this and no reason to think at this stage that problem is asthma. Children pick up lots of bugs whilst they are young, which helps their immunity.

thanks Bevvy so you think this could have been non asthma related? The doctor seemed to think it was asthma so on the blue puff at the moment

Obviously I’m not a medic but if purely an asthma attack then why would he have a high temperature? Little ones often have high temperatures due to bugs they pick up….. You are clearly going to keep an eye on him and have knowledge because of being asthmatic yourself. Maybe speak to asthma nurses (ALUK) for advice on what to look out for in children. But seems strange to me that an A&E doctor would jump to asthma…..

try a dehumidifier I keep the humidity down in bedrooms and I know ye not supposed to dry washing in house but I only air it off and only in one room I never put on radiators I dry any mildew off windows daily and I open vents in windows and spray mold n mildew cleaner on the rubber seals so mould doesn’t grow and wipe dry also use a kartcher to clear it or it could be like me allergy to dust and dust mites so advice is to not make bed in a morning let the sun in and open windows hope this helps

It's v unusual to diagnose asthma at 2yrs old and aft only 1 event.usually in children, high temp+change to breathing is caused by viruses.what did the consultant stay× how long was the child admitted x

thanks he had “asthma” before attack. But you are right as too young really to make diagnosis. The doctor said bronchial spasm too.
