Best Antihistamine?

Hi Everyone

I take antihistamines all year round as I am allergic to so many things. Over time some stopped working for me. I find the only thing that works now is the blue box Benadryl. What would you say was the best one to use? I find Loratidine and cetirizine don’t work for me now

The only one that works for me is Fexofenadine 180, In the UK it is prescription only, but in the US you can buy it from the pharmacy. Only downside is you if have to be careful with drinking citrus juice with this, and some antibiotics. Nothing else compares.

Thank you for your reply. I’m in the UK. I would love to see an allergy specialist to see if there is anything they could ever do for me. I live in hope that one day. I won’t be so allergic

Why do you need to be careful with citrus juice??

Hi there,

yes Grapefruit Juice, particularly can cause (I think) a heart problem when mixed with Fexo, If you read the patient notes it tells you. For most people it won't happen, but it is a known side effect, and says best avoid citrus. I take Fexo all the time, I occasionally have orange juice, and use lemon and limes a lot in cooking, but avoid grapefruit juice even though I really like it.

I was prescribed fexo by a specialist and found them excellent. They were prescribed for rhinitis brought on by nasal polyps. I stopped using them once the polyps were dealt with, which is a shame because they dropped off my prescribed medicines list.

That's interesting as I have been feeling that the last 21/2 month citrizune hasn't worked for me .

May be you need something like Montelucast instead. Can't tell you much about it but try googling.

Hi all, I use both fexofenadine and montelukast and would be lost without them both. I have been taking both for about a year, I appear to be allergic to something in most months.. I also am on seretide 50/500 but the doc wants me off that soon. It's been a terrible month for me allergy wise, presume it must be leaf mould and the fluctuating temperatures! Hope you get it sorted soon, I had to ask a couple of times for the fexofenadine as I think it's a bit pricey for the Drs to prescribe but it's brilliant and permanently on my repeat prescription!

Hi, I'm on fenofexadine too (had grapefruit for my breakfast , will be reading the leaflet properly later) also take zafirlukast and ranitidine. I use an air purifier and carry epipen. It is really hard to keep on top of allergies... Good luck I hope you find something that works for you xxx

I can't speak with much autority on this but can only tell you what I do. I take cetirizine daily, when I find it's not enough I pop into the local chemist and buy some old fashioned Piriton, seems to do the trick for me. May be worth a try, but do check they are OK if taken together.

Hi, unfortunately I’m the same, Benadryl blue pack is only thing that works and costs me a fortune as I have to buy from the pharmacy. If you find something similar please do share.

I believe the antihistamine in over-the-counter Sleep Aid is not considered appropriate for those with the Respiratory Condition COPD. Seem to recal the Patient Info Leaflet indicates that it could increase mucus / coughing. Don’t know if this also implies Asthma Suffers should not take it (as Asthma is, likewise, a Respiratory Illness). I’m guessing you’re on this Site because you suffer from Respiratory Illness. So - it seems - not all antihistamines may be appropriate for those with Respiratory Disease.
