wheeze cos steroids finished?

I've got a chest infection and been on steroids / antibiotics since last wednesday. My steroids ran out yesterday and today i feel a bit wheezier. I would've thought that was too soon to notice an effect - is it likely my wheeziness is real or is my brain playing tricks on me?

No, not too soon in my experience. My lungs would've noticed within a few hours of the first morning without steroids. Take some steroids now if you have them or back to GP first thing in the morning, or ooh if need them sooner.

Also possible your trigger/chest infection is not gone if your symptoms have worsened quickly after stopping steroids, so may need different antibiots too.

Thanks lou, i've never been this bad before so not got experience like this. Only had one proper chest infection before and that time by day 3 of the tablets i was feeling much better.

I've not got any more steroids, i was only given 5 days of them. I was planning on going back to the GP in the morning anyway cos my sicknote runs out tomorrow and i am nowhere near ready for going back to work :-( I can manage enough for now with my inhaler - especially if i sit still and do nothing!!

Annoyingly i've also lost my voice (which is fairly normal for me) but every time i try to speak i end up in a big coughing fit although the cough has somewhat dried up and there's not as much gunk moving in my lungs.

It sounds like you need a longer course of steroids , my gp insists on only giving me 5 days of 30mg so I quite often find symptoms return after the 5 days and I have to go back for more. I hope you can see your gp tomorrow.

well i went back to the doctor this morning - more steroids, more antibiotics, more inhalers and a sick note for another week off work!!

I also went to the walk-in centre for my chest x-ray and i was pleased with the service - you get sent straight upstairs to the x-ray department and within about half an hour of me getting there i'd been zapped and was on my way!

I'm glad you've been sorted out at the gps, let's home that's enough to get rid of the infection. Fantastic that the xray wad quick and easy too!

I hope you're starting to feel better by now. The new antibiotics should be starting to clear the infection. Take it easy though, it'll take a while to recover from the infection and then twitchyness of the lungs. Be careful when you get back into your swimming and running. Go for a few walks before short and gentle swimming or running sessions. Your lungs will probably feel really odd when you first walk, exercise or run, like they're raw or burning or something (well at least mine do after an exacerbation, might be on my own there).
