Diabetes as a result of steroids

Anyone else been diagnosed with diabetes as a result of long term steroids? I am only 30 and was diagnosed last week. My asthma is poorly controlled so weaning down on the steroids is not an option! Feeling very frustrated.

Yes I have high blood sugar which is due to steroids from oral tablets and inhalers. Definitely not through diet or lack of exercise. I’m not classed diabetic as yet as I’m fighting to keep the levels in the low to mid 40 s for my HbA1c. X

Hi

Yes the same for me….I am not a diabetic (yet) but pred definitely increases my blood sugar whilst I’m on it.

Very frustrating…😐

Type 2 diabetes can be caused by many different things. Far too often the media portray it as only unhealthy (overweight and no exercise) people who have it. I have diabetes and when I intend a new patient course 7 of the people on the course clearly had no weight issues. As said I do have diabetes and potentially it was caused by steroids I have to take. But condition is also in my family so could well have been caused by genetic factors. Who knows?

One thing to say is that prednisone causes high blood sugars in most if not all cases. I try to limit carbs when on it but they also make me eat like everything in sight…… What I do know is they do reduce inflammation and help my breathing when required and as there is no alternative I simply take them.

Thanks for the replies..I have gained alot of weight too my GP is really understanding and doesn't blame me at all. I have poor mobility too and it is in my family so alot of factors. I am now taking metformin for the diabetes but my blood sugars are still extremely high at 24 today 2 hours after eating a reasonably healthy lunch. Its not how I imagined my life at 30.
